Paenibacillus Sepsis and Meningitis in a Premature Infant: A Case Report
Infections due to bacteria of the genus Paenibacillus are exceedingly rare and therefore predominately described on a case-by-case basis. Here, we present a case of a 25-day-old premature neonate who died from presumed Paenibacillus sepsis and meningitis. Most prior reported cases of Paenibacillus bacteremia were among patients who had prosthetic medical devices, were immunocompromised, or were injection drug users. However, to our knowledge, this is the first reported case of infant death from presumed Paenibacillus thiaminolyticus. This case suggests the potential for severe human infection by an environmental bacterium ...

Variable Mechanisms of Sudden and Unexpected Death in Cases of Occult Carcinoma of the Larynx
Two cases of clinically undiagnosed laryngeal squamous cell carcinomas in men aged 57 and 66 years, respectively, are reported that resulted in sudden death from upper airway occlusion. The cause of the terminal event differed between the 2 cases with acute airway narrowing being precipitated by tenacious mucopurulent secretions in case 1 and hemorrhage from surface ulceration with glottic occlusion by blood clot in case 2. At autopsy, the immediate cause of acute airway compromise in cases of space-occupying laryngeal lesions may, therefore, be due to the synergistic effects of different factors. Sudden Death Due to Severe Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome: An Autopsy-Centric Case Report
Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is a rare iatrogenic disorder associated with controlled ovarian stimulation during assisted reproductive technology. Severe OHSS may impose serious complications, including pleural effusion, acute renal insufficiency, venous thrombosis, and even death, although lethal outcomes are rare in forensic practice. The reported incidence of severe OHSS ranges from 0.008% to 10%. Herein, we present the case of a 29-year-old woman who diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome and infertility chose to undergo assisted reproduction. She received leuprorelin acetate and follicle stimulating horm...

Fatal Hemoperitoneum Due to Isolated Splenic Peliosis
Isolated splenic peliosis is an exceedingly rare condition of unclear etiology characterized by blood filled cyst-like cavities in the primary mononuclear phagocytic organ. People with splenic peliosis are typically asymptomatic. However, splenic peliosis may present as an incidental mass on imaging mimicking a neoplasm during life, or present as sudden death after hemoperitoenum when ruptured, mimicking traumatic injury. Awareness of this condition is important to forensic pathologists so as to provide an accurate cause and manner of death. (Source: The American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology)

Cerebral Vascular Thrombosis Associated With Ulcerative Colitis and Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis
We report a case of a sudden death of a 23-year-old man with a history of ulcerative colitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis due to cerebral vascular thrombosis. He was found supine in bed with no signs of trauma or drug use. Three days before being found, he had complained of fever and excessive diarrhea. At autopsy, the brain was markedly edematous with diffuse subarachnoid hemorrhage over the left cerebral hemisphere. The vessels at the base of the brain were unremarkable, and there was no significant hemorrhage over the inferior surfaces. On sectioning, clotted blood was identified in the left frontal lobe and later...

Hemorrhagic Pseudocyst: A Rare Cerebral Mass Lesion Causing Death. A Case Report and Brief Review of Literature
We report a case of fatal hemorrhagic cerebral pseudocyst, a rare mass lesion, associated with a cerebral varix, causing death in a morbidly obese individual. To the best of our knowledge, there is no previous documentation in the postmortem literature of this entity as a cause of death. This case aims to document this rare entity in the differential diagnosis of a tumor-like lesion in the brain, highlight the clinical difficulty in its assessment, and demonstrate an uncommon mechanism of death, of a mass lesion acting as a focus causing seizures, with resulting hypoxia due to effects of morbid obesity and heart failure. (...

Adult Dismembered Body With Myositis Ossificans: Evidence for Physical Abuse in an Autopsy Case Report
A case involving an adult dismembered body with myositis ossificans (MO) is described. A woman in her 20s was found dead in her cohabitants' room. The body had dismembered into 15 pieces. Computed tomography showed ectopic mineralization in the bilateral upper arms and thighs. On autopsy, the skin and soft tissue were in the process of adipocere formation. Darkened areas that appeared to be subcutaneous hemorrhage were distributed on the face, left chest, and back. Bilateral upper arms and thighs showed organized granulations adherent to underlying bone. Microscopically, these organized lesions represented mature bone tiss...

A Fatal Case of Cardiac Contusion After Blunt Chest Injury
In this article, we report the autopsy findings of a 48-year-old man who sustained blunt trauma to the thorax. A medical record review revealed no history of cardiac disease. He presented to the hospital with a computed tomography–verified fracture of the left fourth and fifth ribs, and pulmonary and cardiac contusion. He was released from the hospital in stable condition at his own request 7 days later. Because of sudden deterioration, he was readmitted to the hospital the next day. Electrocardiogram detected cardiac arrhythmia on the 15th day after chest trauma. Electrocardiography detected pericardial effusion and sev...
