Three-Dimensional Morphology and Configuration Analyses of the Craniovertebral Junction in Children with Hemifacial Microsomia
Conclusion. For HFM children, the incidence of C1 deformation increased from type I to type Ill. The probability of C2 anomaly and C1–C2 instability in children with different types of HFM is nearly the same. The craniovertebral junction of every HFM child must be monitored carefully for C1–C2 instability before any surgical procedure to avoid atlantoaxial dislocation and spinal cord injury. ALIF Versus TLIF for L5-S1 Isthmic Spondylolisthesis: ALIF Demonstrates Superior Segmental and Regional Radiographic Outcomes and Clinical Improvements Across More Patient-reported Outcome Measures Domains
Study Design. Retrospective cohort study. Objective. The purpose of this study was to compare segmental and regional radiographic parameters between anterior interbody fusion (ALIF) and posterior interbody fusion (TLIF) for treatment of L5-S1 isthmic spondylolisthesis, and to assess for changes in these parameters over time. Secondarily, we sought to compare clinical outcomes via patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) between techniques and within groups over time. Summary of Background Data. Isthmic spondylolistheses are frequently treated with interbody fusion via ALIF or TLIF approaches. Robust comp...

Trends and Contributing Factors in Medicolegal Cases Involving Spine Surgery
Conclusion and Relevance. Although case rates decreased, patient harm was attributable to health care in the majority of recently closed cases. Therefore, crucial opportunities remain to enhance patient safety in spine surgery. Level of Evidence: 4 (Source: Spine)

Postoperative Evolution of Sagittal Parameters Over Time Does Not Differ by Upper Instrumented Vertebra
Conclusions. Our data suggest that although several key parameters are maintained over time out to 2years postopera- tively, TK tends to worsen over time for all patients, whereas TLK preferentially increases in the LT group. Nevertheless, despite these trends, compensatory changes are seen in PT such that global alignment is relatively maintained. Level of Evidence: 3 (Source: Spine)

Clinical Outcomes of Corrective Fusion Surgery From the Thoracic Spine to the Pelvis for Adult Spinal Deformity at 1, 2, and 5 years Postoperatively
Conclusion. One-year postoperative PROs improved significantly. Two-year PROs correlated strongly with 5-year postoperative PROs, indicating that 2-year PROs can predict longer term outcomes. The need for revision surgery did not influence the mid- to long-term clinical outcomes of corrective fusion surgery for ASD. Level of Evidence: 3 (Source: Spine)

Racial and Social Determinants of Health Disparities in Spine Surgery Affect Preoperative Morbidity and Postoperative Patient Reported Outcomes: Retrospective Observational Study
Study Design. Retrospective observational study. Objective. To elucidate racial and socioeconomic factors driving preoperative disparities in spine surgery patients. Summary of Background Data. There are racial and socioeconomic disparities in preoperative health among spine surgery patients, which may influence outcomes for minority and low socioeconomic status (SES) populations. Methods. Presenting, postoperative day 90 (POD90), and 12-month (12M) outcome scores (PROMIS global physical and mental [GPH, GMH] and visual analog scale pain [VAS]) were collected for patients undergoing deformity arthr...

Ten-Year Outcomes of Minimally Invasive Versus Open Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion in Patients With Single-Level Lumbar Spondylolisthesis
Conclusion. Efficacy of MI-TLIF for patients with single-level lumbar spondylolisthesis is comparable to that of open TLIF over 10-years. However, MI-TLIF may have superior perioperative recovery and 2-year postoperative functional outcomes than open TLIF. Level of Evidence: 3 (Source: Spine)

The Effect of Melatonin on Radicular Pain in a Rat Model of Lumbar Disc Herniation
Conclusion. Melatonin alleviates radicular pain from LDH by inhibiting central sensitization via binding with its receptor 2, decreasing spinal CGRP, IB4, and NR2B expression. (Source: Spine)

Finite Element Comparison of the Spring Distraction System and the Traditional Growing Rod for the Treatment of Early Onset Scoliosis
Conclusion. In the present FEA, TGR treatment resulted in slightly larger curve correction compared to SDS, at the expense of increased IVD stress-shielding and a higher risk of rod fractures. Level of Evidence. N/A (Source: Spine)

The Usefulness of Trabecular CT Attenuation Measurement at L4 Level to Predict Screw Loosening After Degenerative Lumbar Fusion Surgery: Consider Number of Fused Levels and Postoperative Sagittal Balance
Study Design. Retrospective study. Objective. To evaluate the absolute value of L4 trabecular region-of-interest (t-ROI) computed tomography (CT) attenuation, which can predict pedicle screw loosening, and determine the changes in value according to number of fused levels and sagittal balance in patients undergoing lumbar fusion surgery. Summary of Background Data. Although osteoporosis was not diagnosed in spinal dual x-ray absorptiometry preoperatively, we encountered several cases of screw loosening within 1 year of lumbar fusion surgery. Methods. We enrolled 478 patients and analyzed factors ...

Comparative Effectiveness and Functional Outcome of C2 Dome-like Expansive Versus C2 Expansive Open-door Laminoplasty for Upper Cervical Ossification of the Posterior Longitudinal Ligament: A Retrospective Cohort Study
Conclusion. The C2 dome-like expansive laminoplasty can reduce postoperative neck pain more obviously and achieve better cervical curvature. C2 expansive open-door laminoplasty can get more adequate decompression in the spinal canal, which may be recommend to the patients with OPLL occupying more than 50% of the vertebral canal at C2/3, or with developmental spinal stenosis. Coccygectomy in the Treatment of Chronic Coccydynia
Conclusion. Coccygectomy, for patients where conservative measures have failed, seems to give acceptable levels of success and high levels of patient satisfaction. The main complication after this procedure is infection, and the risk can be somewhat reduced by using antibiotic prophylaxis for 48 hours after surgery. Level of Evidence. 4 (Source: Spine)
