Primary follicular lymphoma of the duodenum as an incidental finding on upper gastrointestinal endoscopy
Rev Esp Enferm Dig. 2024 Mar 7. doi: 10.17235/reed.2024.10255/2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrimary follicular lymphoma of the duodenum (FLD) is a rare variant of follicular lymphoma (FL), which represents only 1-4% of gastrointestinal non-hodgkin lymphomas (NHL). It usually appears in the second portion of the duodenum as micronodular lesions and the diagnosis is often incidental. Unlike other NHLs, the prognosis is excellent and the treatment ranges from "watch and wait" to rituximab-based immunochemotherapy regimens, depending on the symptoms and the presence of systemic involvement.PMID:38450479 | DOI:10.17235/re...

Association of microscopic colitis and enteropathy due to olmesartan
We report the case of a patient with severe chronic diarrhea. He was admitted on multiple occasions for this reason, with the cause remaining undetected. After obtaining a detailed medical history and performing several studies, the patient was diagnosed with microscopic colitis and enteropathy due to Olmesartan. In the literature, both diseases appear concurrently only in a few cases. Here we highlight the importance of conducting a comprehensive medical history and maintaining high clinical suspicion to avoid delays in the diagnosis of these uncommon pathologies, as well as unnecessary tests and empirical treatments.PMID...

Unraveling the mystery: congenital absence of the portal vein and its cardiac implications
Rev Esp Enferm Dig. 2024 Mar 7. doi: 10.17235/reed.2024.10323/2024. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 25-year-old male with tachycardia and right heart enlargement was diagnosed with atrial-ventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT) and successfully treated with radiofrequency ablation. Cardiac MRI confirmed right heart enlargement but ruled out cardiomyopathy. Further imaging revealed a rare congenital absence of the portal vein (CAPV) with an associated portosystemic shunt. This case highlights the importance of considering CAPV in unexplained cardiac symptoms and structural heart changes.PMID:38450487 | DOI:10.17235/...

Intestinal cystic lymphangioma
Rev Esp Enferm Dig. 2024 Mar 7. doi: 10.17235/reed.2024.10329/2024. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 7-year-old girl, coming from a rural area in Cameroon, presented to the emergency department with a 3-months history of abdominal pain. Her family also reported vomiting and minimal food intake for two weeks. Physical examination showed a palpable and mobile abdominal mass. An ultrasound showed a large intrabdominal multicystic lesion of about 10cm, close to the intestine and with no solid lesions in other organs. A laparotomy was scheduled and a mobile mass dependent on the jejunum was found. The mass caused an intestinal o...

Gastric ectopic pancreas with a pseudocyst
Rev Esp Enferm Dig. 2024 Mar 7. doi: 10.17235/reed.2024.10339/2024. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEctopic pancreas (EP) is defined as pancreatic tissue that lacks anatomical or vascular connections to the normal pancreas. EP is generally asymptomatic and is detected incidentally during endoscopy. However, due to pseudocyst formation, inflammation, or malignant transformation, it may cause non-specific gastrointestinal symptoms, such as abdominal pain, abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, and bleeding. Pseudocyst formation in EP may result from the retention of exocrine secretions in the absence of connections between th...

A long rectal foreign body successfully removed after colonoscopy
Discussion: Rectal foreign bodies, whose size and shape are variable and sometimes aberrant, are often self-inserted for self-gratification by adults, and its incidence is increasing. Patients typically avoid immediate medical attention and seek help only when complications arise. Formal clinical guidelines are lacking, and this case illustrates the importance of clinical judgement in the management of rectal foreign bodies, whether endoscopic or surgical.PMID:38345475 | DOI:10.17235/reed.2024.10251/2024 (Source: Revista Espanola de Enfermedades Digestivas)

Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection presenting pneumatosis intestinalis and acute respiratory distress syndrome after treatment for COVID-19
Rev Esp Enferm Dig. 2024 Feb 12. doi: 10.17235/reed.2024.10292/2024. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA 91-year-old man was admitted with vomiting and abdominal pain. He had had COVID-19 pneumonia a month before and the treatment had consisted of remdesivir, dexamethasone and baricitinib. CT scans showed pneumatosis intestinalis. His respiratory condition rapidly deteriorated and chest CT scans showed ground-glass opacity and Strongyloides stercoralis was identified in the sputum, making a diagnosis of hyperinfection syndrome associated acute respiratory distress syndrome. Treatment of ivermectin was not achieved in time and ...
