What's important in a contract beyond the salary? A primer for pain physicians and trainees
Pain Pract. 2024 Apr 16. doi: 10.1111/papr.13377. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis manuscript is designed to complement the previously published primer on salary structures for new pain physicians. The previous manuscript "Employment Contract Financial Models for the Pain Physician: A Primer" had a goal of increasing understanding of financial models by pain fellows when preparing for contract negotiations. This manuscript illustrates the many equally important considerations of "non-monetary" values that are a significant part of contract negotiation outside of salary. It contributes to the overall education for trainee...

Acute Treatment Patterns, Migraine Burden, and Healthcare Resource Use in People With Migraine: Results From the OVERCOME (EU) Observational Study
CONCLUSION: High migraine-related burden levels were reported, despite use of acute medication. Although triptans are recommended for moderate to severe migraine attacks in Spanish and German guidelines, less than half of participants were using triptans; treatment satisfaction in those using triptans was generally poor. New tailored treatment options may help address unmet needs in current acute treatment.PMID:38625512 | DOI:10.1007/s40122-024-00589-3 (Source: Pain Physician)

Healthcare experiences of fibromyalgia patients and their associations with satisfaction and pain relief. A patient survey
CONCLUSIONS: Our survey describes deficiencies in FM patients' pain-related healthcare and suggests areas for improvement to increase healthcare satisfaction and pain relief. (REC# 2019/845, 09.05.19).PMID:38625666 | DOI:10.1515/sjpain-2023-0141 (Source: Pain Physician)

Continuous Ambulatory Delivery Device Use for Patients Managed by an Inpatient Palliative Care Team
CONCLUSIONS: This initial study provides the Palliative Care Consult Team with information on the indications for the use of a CADD. The lack of universal access to a CADD in various areas of our hospital due to differences in departmental protocols may compromise good symptom management and patient safety. These results strengthen the argument that the existing hospital policy requires revamping to improve CADD access. A CADD has been shown to provide hospitalized patients, with a malignancy, with timely access to effective symptom management, and in turn, reducing their length of stay in hospital. These findings will hel...

Pressure Infusor Assisted Arthrocentesis
J Oral Maxillofac Surg. 2024 Mar 28:S0278-2391(24)00205-2. doi: 10.1016/j.joms.2024.03.023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTTemporomandibular joint internal disorders commonly present with limited mouth opening and pain. Treatment options range from invasive surgical procedures to minimally invasive interventions. This technical note aims to introduce a modification to the arthrocentesis technique in which a pressure infusion cuff (VBM Classic Infusor, Medizintechnik GmbH, Germany) is used for irrigation instead of syringes or peristaltic pumps. A pressure infusion cuff (bag) is an inflatable bag with a hand pump and a sphyg...

Implementing spiritual care education into the teaching of palliative medicine: an outcome evaluation
CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that implementing spiritual care education following an interprofessional approach into existing medical curricula, e.g. palliative medicine, is feasible and well perceived among medical students. Students do not wish for a seminar which solely revolves around spiritual care but prefer a close link to clinical practice and strategies.PMID:38622620 | DOI:10.1186/s12909-024-05415-0 (Source: Pain Physician)

Impact of Shared Decision-Making on Opioid Prescribing Among Patients with Chronic Pain: A Retrospective Cohort Study
This study measured whether SDM affects opioid prescribing frequency for chronic low back pain. A retrospective cohort study involving 1478 participants was conducted within a national pain research registry. The patient participation and patient orientation (PPPO) scale of the Communication Behavior Questionnaire was used to measure SDM, including classification of greater SDM (PPPO scale score≥80) or lesser SDM (PPPO scale score<80). Opioid prescribing frequency was measured at quarterly intervals from enrollment through 12 months. Baseline and longitudinal covariates were collected to adjust for potential confoundi...

Development of an evidence-based diagnostic algorithm for infection in patients with transcutaneous osseointegration following amputation
Conclusions: This seminal investigation to develop a preoperative diagnostic algorithm for peri-TOFA infection suggests that the clinical examination remains paramount. Further evaluation of a wider spectrum of clinical, laboratory, and imaging data, consistently and routinely collected with prospective data techniques in larger cohorts of patients, is necessary to create a robust predictive algorithm.PMID:38600998 | PMC:PMC11002918 | DOI:10.5194/jbji-9-49-2024 (Source: Pain Physician)

Physician Empathy and Chronic Pain Outcomes
CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this cohort study of adult patients with chronic pain, physician empathy was associated with better outcomes over 12 months. Greater efforts to cultivate and improve physician empathy appear warranted.PMID:38602675 | PMC:PMC11009829 | DOI:10.1001/jamanetworkopen.2024.6026 (Source: Pain Physician)

Patient-reported experience with Fabry disease and its management in the real-world setting: results from a double-blind, cross-sectional survey of 280 respondents
CONCLUSIONS: Our analysis highlights the gap between current standard-of-care in disease monitoring and patient perception of disease progression among patients with FD. This information may be helpful for healthcare providers and drug developers seeking to improve the care of patients with FD by addressing unmet needs of high relevance.PMID:38605390 | PMC:PMC11007961 | DOI:10.1186/s13023-024-03090-4 (Source: Pain Physician)
