Occult Fracture of the Fibula: One Case Report
We describe a case of concealed distal fibula fracture. The radiograph revealed no visible abnormalities at first. Finally, the occult fibula fracture was confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging and the patient received timely, correct, and reasonable treatment after diagnosis. This case raises our awareness of occult fibula fractures that are easily missed, and it deserves to be shared. (Source: Orthopaedic Nursing)

The Accuracy of In-State Prescription Monitoring Program Database and Electronic Medical Records Compared to Urine Toxicology Screening in Total Joint Arthroplasty Preoperative Evaluation
This study aims to compare the accuracy of EMR and PMP versus UTS to determine whether UTS should be implemented as standard of care in TJA preoperative assessment. Preoperative UTS was performed for primary or revision TJA from November 1, 2018, to March 31, 2019. Patient demographics, medical history, prescription history, and UTS results were retrospectively recorded. Prescription monitoring program and EMR were queried for prescription history in the past 2 years. The accuracy of EMR and PMP compared with UTS was calculated. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to identify patient predictors associa...

β€œIt's Not Just a Plaster Cast, My Leg Is in It!”: Patient Experiences: A Qualitative Study
Plaster casts have been used in the treatment of fractures since 1850, and they play an important role in the healing of extremity injuries and operative repairs. Despite the high incidence of fractures and the widespread use of plaster casts in patients with fractures, the quality of counseling in patients with plaster casts has been neglected. There are few studies on the quality of this patient advisement and the nonmedical experiences of patients with plaster casts. We believe that understanding the feelings, thoughts, and experiences of patients who have had plaster casts will contribute to holistic patient care and w...

Factors That Influence Sleep Disturbance and the Mediating Effects of Depression on Sleep Disturbance in Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis
Little is known about the nature of relationships between sleep disturbance and influencing factors in rheumatoid arthritis. The purpose of this study was to identify factors that influence sleep disturbance and to evaluate mediating effects of depression on sleep disturbance. A nonexperimental, descriptive, correlational study design was adopted. One hundred patients with rheumatoid arthritis were recruited. Inflammatory status and levels of pain, fatigue, functional disability, depression, and sleep disturbance were measured. The factors that directly influenced sleep disturbance were gender, rheumatoid arthritis duratio...

Not So Sweet: Preoperative Diabetes Screening in the Total Joint Population
Clearly identifying patients with prediabetes and diabetes prior to surgery allows the clinical team to target interventions and reduce the risks of complications. Yet, protocols for preoperative diabetes screening vary. The purpose of this article is to present an evidence-based practice project examining the implementation of preoperative diabetes screening in an elective total joint patient population. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) Risk Test was used to assess diabetes risk and guide further testing. A total of 121 patients were screened. Of the sample, 55 were undiagnosed and at risk for diabetes according to...

The Role of Patient and Parent Education in Pediatric Cast Complications
Cast immobilization remains the standard of care in managing pediatric fractures. Cast complications often result in emergency department visits, office calls and visits, or lasting patient morbidities that burden the healthcare institution from a time and economic standpoint. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to create a multimodal cast care education protocol with an aim of decreasing cast complications over a 6-week period. Qualified patients (0–18) placed in cast immobilization received a quick response (QR) code sticker on their casts linked to a custom cast care website with text, pictures, and vi...
