Trauma is the leading cause of death and disability in children. Orthopaedic trauma has led to more than 84,000 hospital admissions annually and costs nearly a billion dollars. Femoral diaphyseal fractures account for nearly 2% of all bony injuries in children and are the most common orthopaedic injury requiring hospitalization. These injuries occur at an annual rate of 19 per 100,000, with an associated cost of millions of dollars. Partnership Across Transitions to Improve Outcomes in the Lower Extremity Total Joint Population
BACKGROUND:
With the urgency related to improving quality and creating efficiency in healthcare, partnership is emerging as a critical concept related to transitions of care.
PURPOSE:
This quality improvement project included facilitation of hospital partnership with skilled nursing facilities to improve outcomes associated with the lower extremity total joint arthroplasty population.
METHODS:
The clinical nurse specialist (CNS) utilized a standardized framework to implement partnership strategies with multidisciplinary teams. Outcomes were monitored for the 2 quarters of partnership activities.

Bilateral Total Knee Arthroplasty: Predictors of Discharge Disposition
BACKGROUND:
Total knee arthroplasty is on the rise. Some patients choose to undergo simultaneous bilateral total knee arthroplasty (simultaneous BTKA). No studies were found that examined which patients may be better candidates to successfully undergo this procedure.
PURPOSE:
The purpose of this study was to determine personal and comorbid characteristics of patients undergoing simultaneous BTKA that are predictive of length of stay (LOS) and discharge to a skilled nursing facility (SNF).
