Fully neuroendoscopic resection of cerebellopontine angle tumors through a retrosigmoid approach: a retrospective single-center study
The objective of this study is to preliminarily investigate the surgical safety, efficacy, techniques, and clinical value of fully neuroendoscopic surgery for the resection of cerebellopontine angle (CPA) tumors via a retrosigmoid approach. The clinical data of 47 cerebellopontine angle area (CPA) tumors that were treated by full neuroendoscopic surgery from June 2014 to June 2023 were retrospectively analyzed. The efficacy and advantages of the surgical techniques were evaluated based on indicators such as duration of the surgery, neuroendoscopic techniques, intraoperative integrity of nerves and blood vessels, extent of ...

Exploring the influence of nasal morbidity on quality of life following endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery: a retrospective cohort study of 95 patients
AbstractThe endoscopic endonasal approach is more disruptive to normal anatomy (particularly nasal mucosa) than the transseptal submucosal microscopic approach. This may result in greater postoperative nasal morbidity, in turn reducing quality of life. We aimed to assess the severity and time course of nasal morbidity, and its impact on quality of life, following endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery in this retrospective cohort study. We identified 95 patients who underwent endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery for anterior skull base pathologies. Nasal-specific questions from the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-22 (SNOT-22) ...

Fusiform aneurysms of anterior cerebral artery: center experience and systematic literature review
AbstractFusiform aneurysms of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA) are uncommon, and the natural history of this entity is poorly characterized. Along with our center experience, we conducted a systematic literature review to help shed light on the clinical course of ACA fusiform aneurysms. We queried our institutional database to identify cases with fusiform aneurysms of ACA. In addition, following the PRISMA algorithm, we identified all reported cases published in the English literature from the inception of PubMed until December 2022. We categorized clinical presentations into three categories: (i) traumatic/iatrogenic, (...

Effectiveness of gamma knife radiosurgery in the management of trigeminal neuralgia associated with multiple sclerosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsIn conclusion, treating trigeminal neuralgia in multiple sclerosis patients remains challenging. GKRS shows promise, but customized treatment approaches tailored to individual patient characteristics are urgently needed to address the unique challenges of this condition. Fluorescence-guided resection of intradural spinal tumors: a systematic review and meta-analysis
AbstractIntradural spinal tumors present significant challenges due to involvement of critical motor and sensory tracts. Achieving maximal resection while preserving functional tissue is therefore crucial. Fluorescence-guided surgery aims to improve resection accuracy and is well studied for brain tumors, but its efficacy has not been fully assessed for spinal tumors. This meta-analysis aims to delineate the efficacy of fluorescence guidance in intradural  spinal tumor resection. The authors performed a systematic review in four databases. We included studies that have utilized fluorescence agents, 5-aminolevulinic acid (...

Usefulness of time-resolved MR angiography in spinal dural arteriovenous fistula (SDAVF) —a systematic review and meta-analysis
This study aims to evaluate the usefulness of time-resolved MR angiography (TR –MRA) in SDAVF diagnosis. We performed a systematic review of the PubMed and EMBASE databases followed by a meta-analysis. TR–MRA was an index test, and spinal DSA was a reference. Of the initial 324 records, we included 4 studies describing 71 patients with SDAVFs. In 42 cases, TR–MRA was tru e positive, and in 21 cases, it was true negative. We found 7 false-positive cases and 1 false negative. TR–MRA allowed for shunt level identification in 39 cases. Of these, the predicted level was correct in 23 cases (59%), to within 1 level in 38...

Impact of ventriculo-cisternal irrigation on prevention of delayed cerebral infarction in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage: a single-center retrospective study and literature review
ConclusionManaging vasospasms with VCI after SAH is considered a safe and effective method to prevent DCI. Early surgery after SAH may be associated with a decreased risk of DCI with VCI therapy. (Source: Neurosurgical Review)

Cervical laminoplasty versus laminectomy and fusion: An umbrella review of postoperative outcomes
AbstractWhile multiple studies exist comparing cervical laminoplasty (CLP) and posterior cervical laminectomy with fusion (PCF), no clear consensus exists on which intervention is better. An umbrella review helps provide an overall assessment by analyzing a given condition ’s multiple interventions and outcomes. It integrates all available information on a topic and allows a consensus to be reached on the intervention of choice. A literature search was conducted using specific search criteria in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Titles and abstracts were screened based on inclusion criteria. A full-text revie...

Impact of deep brain stimulation therapy on the vertebral sagittal balance in Parkinson ’s disease patients
This study aims to define the possible impact of DBS, with selective targeting on the dorsal-lateral region of the STN, on the sagittal balance of patients affected by PD. Among all patients that have undergone D BS procedures in our institution, we selected eight subjects, four females and four males, with selective targeting on the dorsal-lateral region of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) because of camptocormia and other severe postural changes. Radiological assessments of spinal balance parameters before su rgery and at 6 and 12 months postoperatively were carried out. Comparison of preoperative and postoperative spine X...

An anatomical study of the sigmoid sinus artery: Application to the transmastoid approach
ConclusionsWhen the mastoid foramen is observed, it does not always only carry an emissary vein but also an artery. The SSA could be considered a “warning landmark” during bone drilling for the transmastoid approach. (Source: Neurosurgical Review)

Nomogram for predicting cardiovascular disease mortality in patients with meningioma: a competing risk analysis
AbstractCancer patients may have increased risk of cardiovascular mortality than general population. We designed this study to investigate the incidence and risk factors of cardiovascular mortality in meningioma patients. Meningioma patients recorded in Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database between 2004 and 2016 were eligible for this study. The standardized mortality ratio (SMR) was calculated to present the relative risk of cardiovascular mortality (ICD-10 codes I00-I99) in meningioma patients compared with general population. Fine –Gray subdistribution proportional hazards regression was performed ...

The impact of time to evacuation on outcomes in endoscopic surgery for supratentorial spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage: a single-center retrospective study
This study suggests a potential association between early endoscopic evacuation of supratentorial SICH and improved functional outcomes, lower 30-day mortality and reduced complicati ons. The need for timely intervention in managing supratentorial SICH is highlighted, yet further validation through multi-center prospective studies is essential to substantiate these findings and provide a higher level of evidence. Fitness-to-drive after adult civilian traumatic brain injury: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis
AbstractTraumatic brain injury (TBI) poses significant challenges for assessing fitness-to-drive (FTD) and determining the appropriate timing for return-to-driving (RTD) in civilian adults. This systematic review and meta-analysis protocol is designed to offer a comprehensive assessment of RTD timelines post-TBI, examining the effects of injury severity as well as demographic and clinical factors that influence driving capabilities. In response to gaps identified in previous literature —namely, the absence of recent systematic search strategies and thorough quality assessments—this study employs rigorous methodologies ...
