The Current State of Alcohol Screening and Management in Virginia Primary Care Practices
Guidelines recommend screening, counseling, and treatment for unhealthy alcohol use (UAU). The authors sought to identify how well this preventive service is delivered in routine primary care by evaluating electronic health record (EHR) documentation and surveying patients about their office visit. Sixty patients from sixty-three practices were included. Based on EHR documentation, only 10.8% of patients were screened using the recommended instrument and 9.6% were identified as having risky drinking. Adolescent Onset of Acute Heart Failure
Heart failure in adolescents can manifest due to a multitude of causes. Presentation is often quite variable ranging from asymptomatic to decompensated heart failure or sudden cardiac death. Because of the diverse nature of this disease, a thoughtful and extensive evaluation is critical to establishing the diagnosis and treatment plan. Identifying and addressing reversible pathologies often leads to functional cardiac recovery. Some disease states are irreversible and progressive, requiring chronic heart failure management and potentially advanced therapies such as transplantation. (Source: Medical Clinics of North America)

Brief Action Planning in Health and Health Care
Achieving maximal health outcomes via health promotion and disease prevention requires the adoption of healthy behaviors. Brief action planning (BAP) is a method for patient self-management, health behavior change, and health coaching with potentially broad implications for and clinical applications in health and health care contexts. This scoping review presents 5 major findings about the literature on BAP: the principal geographic locations and the clinical contexts of its application, the types of research evaluations that it has undergone to date, the theoretic frameworks in which it is grounded, and the fidelity of it...
