Occupations associated with treatment seeking and biopsychosocial functioning at a tertiary orofacial pain clinic: A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: Several occupations are strongly over- and underrepresented among adults seeking OFP treatment. Differences were not explained by biopsychosocial functioning.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Future research should attempt to identify and address the underlying mechanisms of association between occupation and seeking care for OFP.PMID:37988046 | DOI:10.1016/j.adaj.2023.09.021 (Source: Journal of the American Dental Association)

Trajectories of opioid prescribing by general dentists, specialists, and oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the United States, 2015-2019
CONCLUSIONS: The authors identified variations in dentists' opioid prescribing rates. Although 60% of dentists decreased prescribing rates by 30% through 83%, 3.4% of dentists consistently prescribed at high rates.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Some dentists continue to prescribe opioids at high levels, indicating that additional information is needed to better inform policy and clinical decision making.PMID:37988047 | DOI:10.1016/j.adaj.2023.10.002 (Source: Journal of the American Dental Association)

Correlates of human papillomavirus vaccination intent for oropharyngeal cancer prevention among gay and bisexual men living in the United States
CONCLUSIONS: The benefits of HPV vaccination for the prevention of OPC is associated with intent to vaccinate among GBM. Dental care providers can use this information to educate patients in this high-risk population on prevention of HPV-associated OPC.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Dentists can advocate for HPV vaccination uptake among GBM patients by means of discussing the benefits of vaccination in the prevention of HPV-associated OPC.PMID:37988048 | DOI:10.1016/j.adaj.2023.09.016 (Source: Journal of the American Dental Association)

Oxidative stress-mediated proapoptosis signaling: A novel theory on the mechanism underlying the pathogenesis of burning mouth syndrome
CONCLUSIONS AND PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: The authors present a novel hypothesis for BMS pathogenesis, highlighting the role of proapoptotic transmembrane calcium permeable channels and oxidative stress-mediated apoptosis signaling in the development of BMS symptoms. Understanding these underlying mechanisms could provide new insights into the development of targeted therapeutic interventions for BMS. Additional research is warranted to validate this hypothesis and explore potential avenues for effective management of BMS.PMID:37966403 | DOI:10.1016/j.adaj.2023.08.014 (Source: Journal of the American Dental Association)

Patient receptivity to receiving vaccinations in the dental clinic at a rural federally qualified health center
CONCLUSIONS: The authors' findings support efforts to administer vaccines during dental visits to improve immunization rates among adults and children. Ongoing communication with primary care physicians regarding administration of vaccines in the dental clinic could reduce concerns by adult patients and pediatric caregivers.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Strategies and policies that establish protocols to ensure the safe and effective administration of vaccines in dental visits should be implemented and supported.PMID:37943218 | DOI:10.1016/j.adaj.2023.09.006 (Source: Journal of the American Dental Association)
