Prevalence of complete edentulism among US adults 65 years and older: A Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System study from 2012 through 2020
CONCLUSIONS: Despite a decrease in prevalence of edentulism, disparities based on race, income, and education still exist. Edentulism is associated with chronic diseases in older adults.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Public health initiatives should be aimed at reducing the impact of edentulism and improving overall quality of life among older adults. Community health programs allocating resources to improve access to affordable care, reducing precursors to edentulism, expanding dental coverage, and promoting oral and general health awareness are vital components of these efforts.PMID:38520422 | DOI:10.1016/j.adaj.2024.02.002 (So...

Penicillin allergy reassessment for treatment improvement: A dental office tool to support appropriate penicillin allergy labeling
CONCLUSIONS: Patient and HCW feedback on the PARTI tool was used to finalize a tool for the dental office to provide to patients who are candidates for PCN allergy reassessment. The feedback will also be used to inform an upcoming pilot study in US dental offices, focused on the process for PCN allergy reassessment and health record documentation.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Deploying the PARTI tool in dental offices is pivotal, as mislabeling patients with PCN allergies could have severe consequences, such as hindering the prescription of lifesaving antibiotics for conditions like endocarditis, in the future. This implementati...

Effectiveness of wearing glasses with green lenses on dental anxiety for third-molar surgery: A randomized clinical trial
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with anxiety could wear low-cost, easy-to-use glasses with green lenses for 10 minutes before an operation to reduce anxiety and heart rate. In addition, wearing glasses during the surgical procedure can reduce intraoperative pain.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: By means of using glasses with green lenses throughout the procedure, existing anxiety and pain can be reduced. An operation can be performed more comfortably for both the patient and the dentist. This clinical trial was registered at ClinicalTrials.gov. The registration number is NCT05584696.PMID:38520420 | DOI:10.1016/j.adaj.2024.02.006 (Source: Jou...

Factors associated with oral hygiene compliance in patients treated with radiation therapy for head and neck cancer
CONCLUSIONS: The reasons for the cohort of patients with HNC in this study being OHNC are multifaceted and relate to socioeconomic factors and cancer characteristics.PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Finding ways to increase OHC and fluoride use among patients with HNC who are at greatest risk of being OHNC should be explored.PMID:38456849 | DOI:10.1016/j.adaj.2023.11.018 (Source: Journal of the American Dental Association)
