Facile fabrication of new bioadsorbents from Moringa oleifera and alginate for efficient removal of uranium(VI)
This article presents the first study on the use of alginate and moringa as an effective adsorbent for uranium treatment under various conditions. A new method of preparing adsorbents was used by addingMoringa oleifera seeds (MOS) to alginate through simple grafting. The resulting beads have a heterogeneous, sponge-like structure that is reversible. The adsorbents were tested for their ability to remove uranium ions from water and showed excellent efficiency with an adsorption capacity of 443.60  mg/g for alginate-PEI-MOS and 341.38 mg/g for alginate-Glu-MOS. Additionally, these adsorbents showed an interesting rate of s...

Selection of simulants for separating radionuclides of transplutonium and rare-earth elements via displacement complexing chromatography with DTPA-based eluents
AbstractThe paper presents data on selecting curium and americium simulants for the lab-scale development of a displacement complexing chromatography-based separation technique. Being eluted with the eluents based on DTPA and a mixture of DTPA and citric acid, the rare earth element holmium behaves exactly as curium and terbium —as americium. Conversely, the tracer additives of transplutonium radionuclides are a perfect option for rare earth separation studies. (Source: Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry)

Microwave sintering for rapid treatment of simulated Nd3+ and Sr2+ radioactive contaminated soil: exploring the influence of Nd:Sr mass ratio and mechanism
This study achieves the successful immobilization of simulated alpha- and beta-emitting radionuclides (Nd3+ and Sr2+, respectively) by incorporating them into a glass matrix through Nd2O3/SrSO4 (Nd/Sr). Varying mixture concentrations (5 –30 wt% with mass ratios Nd:Sr varied from 10:1 to 1:10) in simulated radioactive soils were subjected to microwave sintering at 1500 °C for 0.5 h. Comprehensive assessments, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), confirm the vitrification process’s efficacy. T...

Evaluation of natural radioactivity levels and related radiological hazards in marine sediment samples taken from Ahanta West in the Gulf of Guinea, Ghana
AbstractA baseline study was carried out to determine the activity concentrations of238U,232Th-decay series and40K in marine sediment. Surface sediments were taken from 29 sample stations. The average activity concentrations(Bq  kg−1) of238U (20.2),232Th (7.4) and40K (70.0) were below the world average with an annual effective dose (43.07  µSv y−1) unlikely to pose significant radiological risk. The ERICA tool application confirmed the potential dose rate to marine biota from radioactivity in sediments is unlikely to pose an appreciable risk. The findings offer a crucial radiological risk profile characteristic tha...

Rapid vitrification of simulated HLLW by ultra-high power laser
AbstractIt is essential to treat high-level liquid waste (HLLW) in a secure and effective manner. As a result, we first propose rapid vitrification of simulated HLLW using an ultra-high power laser. First, a cured body with a mass of 24.4  kg was obtained by using ultra-high power laser sintering. Subsequently, four different locations of the curing body were tested and the measured performance indicators were all in accordance with the regulations. This demonstrates the potential of ultra-high power lasers in HLLW glass curing proc esses. (Source: Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry)

Simultaneous diffusion of Re(VII) and Se(IV) in compacted Tamusu clay by capillary method
AbstractThis paper presents the first laboratory-based, simultaneous diffusion experiments of Re(VII) and Se(IV) in Tamusu (TMS) clay, using the capillary method. We determined diffusion coefficients (Da) and adsorption values (Kd) for these nuclides under varying clay compaction densities, solution pH values, ionic strengths, and in the presence of humic acid (HA). The results indicated rapid acquisition of diffusion data, theDa values predominantly ranging from 10−9 m2/s  to 10−10 m2/s, and weak adsorption for both Re(VII) and Se(IV). While the presence of HA augmented theDa andKd values for Re(VII) and Se(IV) diff...

Numerical study on the characterization of NdFeB permanent magnets with fast-neutrons induced (n, n ′γ) reactions
AbstractThe potential of prompt gamma analysis based on inelastic scattering of 2.5  MeV neutrons for a rapid characterization of NdFeB permanent magnets is investigated by means of numerical simulations using an HPGe detector and a CZT detector-array. The results show that rapid assay of a 42 g magnet can be achieved in some minutes when the neutron flux at sample position is ab out 1.6 × 109 cm−2 s−1 and the detector count rate limited to 500  kcps. Such a high neutron flux could be delivered by a compact 5 MeV proton accelerator with a thick beryllium target for neutron production through the9Be(p,xn)9Be....
