Frailty and Function in Heart Failure: Predictors of 30-Day Hospital Readmission?
Conclusions: Functional assessment demonstrated comparable ability to predict 30-day readmissions in persons with heart failure compared with frailty. However, neither measure was able to identify persons at high risk for readmission. Although frailty status is emphasized in research for older adults with heart failure, functional status is an important patient-level factor associated with readmission. Factors Associated With Discharge Destination in Community-Dwelling Adults Admitted to Acute General Medical Units
Conclusion: Two models were created that differentiated between discharge home and not home and had similar statistical measures of validity. Although the models require further validation, clinicians should consider whether identification of patients likely to be discharged home or not home is of greater relevance for their clinical setting. Factors Impacting Early Mobilization Following Hip Fracture: An Observational Study
Conclusions: Less than half of this cohort achieved the guideline of mobilization within 48 hours of surgery. Patients who develop delirium within the first 2 days of surgery or who had premorbid mobility limitation were less likely to mobilize. Identification of patients likely to have delayed mobilization will assist physical therapists with delivering appropriate management to patients with hip fracture during their acute hospital stay. Trajectories and Predictors of Functional Capacity Decline in Older Adults From a Brazilian Northeastern Hospital
Conclusion: Hospitalization events may be catastrophic for functional capacity in older adults in Brazil. Functional, cognitive, and emotional status and in-hospital mobility must be carefully assessed at hospital admission and monitored during hospitalization. Effective strategies for preventing loss in functional capacity in older people must improve in the Brazilian hospital system. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy)

Rate of Force Development as a Predictor of Mobility in Community-dwelling Older Adults
Conclusions: Compared to common assessments of muscular performance, such as handgrip strength and chair rise performance, PF RFD was a greater predictor of mobility in older adults. These findings, in conjunction with recent reports, indicate that the assessment of RFD likely complements strength testing, thereby enabling a more robust assessment of functional decline in older adults. One-Year Change in the Physical Functioning of Older People According to the International Classification of Functioning Domains
Conclusions: Significant declines were seen in lower extremity muscle strength, walking capacity, speed, mobility, sit-to-stand performance, upper extremity function, and balance performance at 1 year. On the contrary, no significant changes were observed in the levels of participation in activities of daily living, activities related to balance, or physical activity. According to the ICF framework, during 1 year, our sample of older people showed declines in the Body Functions and Activities (capacity) domains, but the Activities and Participation (performance) domain remained stable. Participants' Perceptions and the Implementation of a Physical Fitness Screen for Aging Adults
Conclusion: The A-Fit could be a feasible screening tool for physical therapists to implement in the clinical setting and have value in identifying aging adults with declines in physical fitness and those who would benefit from further interventions. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy)

NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery in Young and Older Adults: Reliability and Relationship to Adiposity and Physical Activity
This study measured between-day reliability of executive function metrics in young and older individuals and examined associations between cognition, adiposity, and physical activity. Methods: Forty-three young and 24 older participants underwent executive function assessment via the National Institutes of Health Toolbox Cognition Battery (Dimensional Change Card Sort, Flanker Inhibitory Control and Attention [Flanker], and List Sorting Working Memory [List Sorting]) at 7-day intervals. Between-day reliability was assessed via intraclass correlation (ICC). Responsiveness was assessed via between-day effect size and ...
