Perceived Neighborhood Walkability is Associated with Recent Falls in Urban Dwelling Older Adults
Conclusions: Perceptions of neighborhood walkability are lower in urban-dwelling older adults with a history of falling. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy)

Sections of the Brief-Balance Evaluation Systems Test Relevant for Discriminating Fast Versus Slow Walking Speeds in Community-Dwelling Older Women
Conclusions: Three sections (III, anticipatory postural adjustments; IV, reactive postural responses; and VI, stability in gait) could differentiate between fast and slow walkers. Section VI was a particularly important balance function measurement that differentiated the walking speed with the highest accuracy. Therefore, it should be a primary focus when physical therapists treat community-dwelling older adults. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy)

The Effectiveness of Multicomponent Functional Maintenance Initiatives for Acutely Hospitalized Older Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
Conclusions: Data from a small number of studies suggest MFMIs reduce the likelihood of discharge to a nursing staff facility in acutely hospitalized older adults; however, this effect may not be driven via improvements in physical function. Standardized evaluation methods to determine MFMI effectiveness appear indicated to assist decision-making regarding their implementation in clinical practice. Multimodal Interventions Including Rehabilitation Exercise for Older Adults With Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain: A Systematic Review and Meta-analyses of Randomized Controlled Trials
Conclusion: Multimodal intervention including exercise rehabilitation combined with usual medical care is an efficacious therapeutic option to reduce disabilities in older adults with chronic MSKDs. A significant but not clinically important effect was observed for pain. The most beneficial component of the multimodal interventions in terms of education, exercises, or medication remains to be determined. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy)

Comparison of the Pressure Biofeedback Unit and Real-Time Ultrasound Imaging as Feedback Tools to Contract the Transversus Abdominis Muscle: A Randomized Controlled Trial in Healthy Older Adults
Conclusions: Neither the RUSI nor the PBU seems to have the desired effect on the activation of TrA in asymptomatic older adults. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy)

Effects of a 16-Week Multimodal Exercise Program on Physical Performance in Individuals With Dementia: A Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial
Conclusions: This randomized controlled trial revealed no overall effects of the MEP on physical performance, probably due to high heterogeneity of the study sample. Findings in responder analysis showed that IWD with lower physical performance at baseline tended to benefit more than those with higher baseline performance. Thus, a higher degree of individualization of the MEP depending on baseline performance on IWD may improve overall MEP effectiveness. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy)

A Randomized Controlled Study Assessing the Effects of a Shoe Lift Under the Nonparetic Leg on Balance Performance in Individuals With Chronic Stroke
Conclusion: The results indicated that the use of a shoe lift under the nonaffected leg in the context of a balance training program could result in a greater improvement in static standing balance as compared with balance training alone in an individual with chronic stroke. Trial Registration: The study was retrospectively registered in the Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials (IRCT20190603043808N1). (Source: Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy)

Efficacy of Traditional Physical Therapy Versus Otago-Based Exercise in Fall Prevention for ALF-Residing Older Adults
Conclusions: These findings indicated that both an OBEP and tpt may be effective interventions for reducing falls and fall risk in the ALF setting. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy)

Test-Retest Reliability and Minimal Detectable Change of the Instrumented Modified Clinical Test of Sensory Interaction on Balance in Healthy, Older Adults
Conclusions: The i-mCTSIB measurements utilizing the VSR Sport demonstrated good-to-excellent test-retest reliability. The clinical relevance of this study is that it demonstrates that the VSR Sport is a feasible alternative to other more expensive computerized systems used for the assessment of postural sway. MDC90 scores allow interpretation of change in i-mCTSIB scores following intervention. Practice effects may have contributed to the larger MDC90 for sway scores in the foam surface, eyes closed condition. (Source: Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy)
