Transitional Dynamics of Three Supervisory Styles Using Markov Chain Analysis
In this study, we used Markov chain analysis to explore supervision dynamics of 34 supervisory dyads and how these dynamics varied within three supervisory styles (i.e., attractive, interpersonally sensitive, and task oriented). Among the three styles, the interpersonally sensitive supervisory style was the only discriminant variable based on which supervisory dyads exhibited statistically different state ‐transitional patterns (i.e., movement patterns across six supervision events). The results of this study provide implications for clinical supervisors, counselor educators, counselors‐in‐training, and researchers w...

Adverse Childhood Experiences: A 20 ‐Year Content Analysis of American Counseling Association and American School Counselor Association Journals
The purpose of this content analysis was to illustrate trends related to the use of the termadverse childhood experiences (ACEs), or terms related to the 10 components of ACEs, within 140 peer ‐reviewed articles published in 22 journals affiliated with the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) between 1998 and 2018. Of the 9,120 articles published in the 22 ACA‐ and ASCA‐affiliated journals in that time, only three articles (0.03% ) explicitly mentioned the termadverse childhood experiences in the title, abstract, or keywords. Authors of 93 journal articles mention...

Investigating Psychometric Properties of Social Media Addiction Measures Among Adolescents
Assessment has a long history in counseling, with scholars noting multiple benefits to using assessment instruments in determining client strengths and needs as well as establishing relevant treatment goals. However, when counselors use unreliable or invalid instruments, they gather results that are ill equipped to inform clinical decision ‐making. Consequently, we evaluated and compared the psychometric properties of three scales of social media addiction—the Social Media Disorder Scale (van den Eijnden et al., 2016), the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (Andreassen et al., 2012, 2016), and the Social Media Addicti...

Mixed ‐Design Training Outcomes for Fellows Serving At‐Risk Youth Within Integrated Care Settings
We used an exploratory mixed ‐methods design with single‐case comparative analysis and analysis of covariance to evaluate the potential effectiveness of an interprofessional clinical training in a mental health counseling program. Initial findings indicate those engaging in specialized learning experiences that attended to critical aspects of youth behavioral health care experienced benefits with regard to their professional development, interprofessional socialization and valuing, and counseling self‐efficacy. Implications for the usefulness of trainings focused on interprofessional experiences are framed in relati ...

School Counselors' Experiences With Lockdown Drills: A Phenomenological Investigation
Lockdown drills are used in pre ‐K–12 public schools throughout the country; however, little research exists regarding their impact on students and school staff (Ilk, 2018). Because of school counselors' role in both prevention of and response to school gun violence (American Counseling Association, 2018), we used a phenomenol ogical approach to investigate their experiences with lockdown drills (N = 26). Results included the following three themes: (a) school counselors' sense of duty to follow school protocol, (b) unintended emotional consequences related to lockdown drills, and (c) school counselors navigating compl...

Counseling Military Populations: A Content Analysis of Counseling Journals From 1998 to 2018
Mental health scholarship of military populations is largely guided by researchers in psychiatry and psychology. Recent advocacy efforts have created increased opportunities for professional counselors to serve military clients, but the research within the profession has yet to be explored. A content analysis of 23 professional counseling journals from June 1998 to June 2018 was conducted to determine military population research trends. Findings indicated that counselors are researching topics similar to those of other mental health fields, such as posttraumatic stress, but are contributing to those topics conceptually ra...

Effects of Self ‐Compassion and Social Support on Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual College Students' Positive Identity and Career Decision‐Making
The purpose of this study was to explore the serial mediating effects of self ‐compassion and social support on the relationship between positive identity and career decision‐making self‐efficacy (CDMSE) among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) college students. A total of 222 LGB (109 bisexual, 113 lesbian/gay) students participated in the study. Results supported the me diating roles of self‐compassion and social support. Specifically, self‐compassion and social support sequentially mediated the relationship between positive identity and CDMSE, and the patterns of the sequence of the mediators were different betw...

Individual and Contextual Factors Associated With School Connectedness in the Context of Counseling in Schools
School connectedness refers to students' beliefs that their peers and adults at school care about their learning and themselves as individuals. School connectedness has been widely documented as a significant predictor for positive student outcomes, yet little is known about factors associated with it as an outcome variable. Guided by the advocating student ‐within‐environment framework situated with the social development model, this study explored individual and contextual factors associated with school connectedness among 1,201 students in Grades 4 to 8. Gender, ethnicity, grade level, and social skills were found t...

Personal Growth Initiative and Mental Health: A Meta ‐Analysis
Personal growth initiative (PGI) is an individual's active and intentional desire to grow in personally important areas. In the past 20 years, a body of literature has emerged examining PGI's relationship to mental health. We conducted the first meta ‐analyses to synthesize this literature. Two meta‐analyses examined the relationship between PGI total scores and distress (k = 22) and wellness (k = 37). Both average effect sizes were significant. We also examined the potential impact of nine moderators. The type of outcome assessed was a significant moderator for PGI and distress, and the PGI measure used was a signific...

Surviving Toward College Graduation
This 5 ‐year longitudinal study with a diverse sample of 405 graduating high school seniors examined the person, behavior, and environment (PBE) factors that increased student chances of deciding to attend a 2‐ or 4‐year college, enrolling in college the fall semester immediately following high schoo l graduation, and then returning to that same college a year later as a retained college student. Survivability across these three critical college‐going transitions was a function of two different kinds of PBE patterns. First, certain PBE factors played prominent roles at specific transition poin ts and then more mino...

Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competency Research: Opportunities for Innovation
The development of the Multicultural and Social Justice Counseling Competencies (Ratts, Singh, Nassar ‐McMillan, Butler,& McCullough, 2015) provides a framework to reflect upon previous scholarship and explore further approaches for methodological innovation in counseling. The author presents available counseling and interdisciplinary scholarship related to multicultural and social justice competency, identifies gaps and future research directions of that research, and proposes innovative strategies and methods for conducting rigorous multicultural and social justice research. Implications for preparing future counseling...
