Psychometric Synthesis of the Parent ‐Child Relationship Inventory
This study presents a psychometric synthesis of data across 52 publications that met criteria and reported use of the Parent-Child Relationship Inventory (PCRI; Gerard, 1994) across disciplines and in numerous contexts. Results revealed low score reliability, with aggregated alphas of .63 to .83 and test-retest coefficients of .62 to .79 over a 1-year retest period across subscales and total score. There was little evidence of score validity, including no exploratory or confirmatory factor analytic studies, or evidence of diagnostic validity. Cautions for use of the PCRI and implications for professional counselors and res...

Alcohol and Substance Use Symptom Differences Between Classes of Perfectionists
We examined how multidimensional perfectionism is associated with the Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory –3 (SASSI-3; Miller& Lazowski, 1999) among a sample of 428 undergraduate students. Latent profile analysis based on measures of perfectionism and perceived stress supported a four-class model (i.e., adaptive perfectionists, mixed perfectionists, nonperfectionists, and maladaptive perfectionists). Overall, adaptive perfectionists reported fewer alcohol and substance use –related symptoms, whereas maladaptive perfectionists reported higher alcohol and substance use–related symptoms. In addition, according to...

Mental Health Care Experiences of Trans Service Members and Veterans: A Mixed ‐Methods Study
We explored mental health care experiences of trans service members and veterans (TSMVs) through a mixed-methods, convergent parallel design. Quantitative survey data from 50 TSMVs were analyzed using paired-samplest tests to identify differences in perceived stigma and barriers to care in accessing services from nonmilitary versus military-affiliated or Veteran's Health Administration providers (MVAPs). We conducted semistructured interviews with 10 participants, exploring their lived experiences in accessing mental health care from both nonmilitary providers and MVAPs. Integrated mixed-methods results indicate TSMVs are ...

The Effects of Job Demands and Resources on School Counselor Burnout: Self ‐Efficacy as a Mediator
This study investigated the predictive factors of school counselor burnout informed by the job demands –resources model. Structural equation modeling was conducted with a nationwide sample of school counselors (N = 993). The results revealed that caseload and perceived organizational support were predictive of school counselor burnout. In addition, job resources indirectly influenced school counselor burnout mediated by self-efficacy. Implications for preventing school counselor burnout and promoting professional self-efficacy are discussed. (Source: Journal of Counseling and Development)

Cost Borne by the Counselor: Comparing Burnout Between Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Counselors and Non ‐DBT Counselors
This study used a national sample of 209 counselors to assess whether DBT counselors (n = 87) possess higher levels of burnout than non-DBT counselors (n = 122). The results suggest that despite literature stating that working with complex clients increases counselor burnout, there was no difference in client-related burnout between DBT counselors and non-DBT counselors. However, DBT counselors had higher levels of personal burnout and work-related burnout compared with non-DBT counselors, even after controlling for known covariates. Implications for future research and practice regarding mitigating counselor burnout are d...

Evaluation of Trauma, Forgiveness, and Well ‐Being Among African Americans
In this study, 173 African American adults completed measures on the prevalence of traumatic experiences, trauma symptoms, the process of forgiveness, and well-being. Participants endorsed the occurrence of traumatic events in their lives, associated traumatic symptoms, and the intrapersonal forgiveness process. The hypothesized model of trauma forgiveness and well-being was partially supported. The hypothesized model related to processing forgiveness was evident. However, no relationship was found between trauma symptoms and the initial phase of forgiveness. Furthermore, no relationship was found between the final phase o...

Unsupported Causal Inferences in the Professional Counseling Literature Base
We examined articles published in seven top professional counseling journals over a 2-year period to determine the degree to which causal inferences were present in quantitative studies that could only support correlational inference. We found that 61% of 103 correlational studies contained unsupported causal inferences. We discuss the importance of addressing this methodological problem in counseling research and provide recommendations for drawing valid inferences from correlational studies. Effects of Imbalance of Self ‐ and Other‐Care on Counselors' Burnout
This study was aimed at identifying counselor profiles based on their balance between self-care and caring for others, and examining how these profiles differ by levels of burnout and life satisfaction. We conducted a latent profile analysis of 292 Korean counselors and identified four groups: (a) low care, (b) typical care, (c) high care, and (d) low self-care/high other-care. Of these, the typical care and high care groups had lower levels of incompetence and deterioration in personal life and higher levels of life satisfaction compared with the low self-care/high other-care group. Counselor self-awareness, education lev...

Crowdsourcing for Online Samples in Counseling Research
The use of panels and registration systems for sampling procedures in counseling research offers an innovative method of recruiting participants. Websites such as Amazon's Mechanical Turk, provide quick access to pools of participants for an assortment of research designs. Other sites such as Qualtrics and SurveyMonkey Audience offer tailored and targeted searches and recruitment of specific samples to create online panels. Although these methods of accessing a sample provide ease of access and flexibility of design, there are several cautions to consider when using them for counseling research. In this article, we accompl...
