Early Gait Biomechanics Linked to Daily Steps Following Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction
CONCLUSION: Differences in gait biomechanics are present at 2 and 4 months post-ACLR between step groups, with the LSG demonstrating an overall more flexed knee and more profound stepwise underloading throughout stance than the HSG. The results indicate a relation between early gait biomechanics and later daily steps behaviors following ACLR.PMID:38291796 | DOI:10.4085/1062-6050-0464.23 (Source: Journal of Athletic Training)

Become a Health Literacy Champion: Strategies to Promote Health Literacy in Athletic Training
J Athl Train. 2024 Jan 20. doi: 10.4085/1062-6050-0390.23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHealth literacy is defined as "the degree to which individuals have the ability to find, understand, and use information and services to inform health-related decisions and actions for themselves and others."1 Individuals with health disparities are more likely to have poor health outcomes and misuse healthcare services due to low health literacy. This connection between health literacy and health disparities demonstrates the need for clinicians to provide health literate care. Athletic trainers serve as essential points of contact for...

Improving concussion education: do athletic trainer opinions match expert consensus?
CONCLUSIONS: The NCAA-DoD Mind Matters Challenge recommendations require further dissemination. ATs rated collaboration with stakeholders as a feasibility barrier. SS ATs require more resources for educational content, messaging, and promoting peer intervention, but find educating athletes' parents more useful and feasible than collegiate ATs.PMID:38243731 | DOI:10.4085/1062-6050-0486.23 (Source: Journal of Athletic Training)

Persistent Early Knee Osteoarthritis Symptoms in the First Two Years After ACL Reconstruction
CONCLUSIONS: Nearly one quarter of participants exhibited persistent early knee OA symptoms based on KOOS thresholds from 6 to 12 months post-ACLR. Determining if this symptom persistence predicts worse long-term outcomes could inform the need for timely interventions after ACLR. Future research should examine if resolving persistent symptoms in this critical window improves later outcomes. Tracking early OA symptoms over time may identify high-risk patients who could benefit from early treatment.PMID:38243733 | DOI:10.4085/1062-6050-0470.23 (Source: Journal of Athletic Training)

Barriers and Attitudes Toward Seeking Mental Health Services Among Collegiate Marching Band Artists
CONCLUSION: MB artists' barriers and attitudes toward mental healthcare influence their ability to seek care in times of need and have some similarities to collegiate athletes. Awareness of the obstacles MB artists face in receiving mental health care will assist healthcare providers in advocating for improved care in this setting.PMID:38243734 | DOI:10.4085/1062-6050-0368.23 (Source: Journal of Athletic Training)

Neighborhood Context As A Barrier To Sport Participation For Girls: Evidence From A Sports Diversity Index
CONCLUSIONS: The SDI for girls shows significant spatial association with neighborhood level determinants with sport opportunity availability for non-Hispanic Black girls in St. Louis. Athletic training research, policy, and practice should consider the role of social and political determinants of health in shaping community context and resultant health.PMID:38243737 | DOI:10.4085/1062-6050-0372.23 (Source: Journal of Athletic Training)

History, Knowledge, and Education of Sport-Related Concussion Among College Athletes in Japan
CONCLUSIONS: Japanese athletes who participated in CON sports had a higher prevalence of SRC history, higher knowledge, and greater exposure to SRC education than those in LTD or NC. Access to medical staff was associated with higher SRC knowledge.PMID:38243738 | DOI:10.4085/1062-6050-0382.23 (Source: Journal of Athletic Training)

Social Norms and Concussion Disclosure Behavior: Clarification of Terms and Measurement Recommendations
J Athl Train. 2024 Jan 20. doi: 10.4085/1062-6050-0545.23. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNon-disclosed sport-related concussion symptoms pose a significant risk to athletes' health and well-being. Many research investigations have focused on understanding the factors impacting athletes' concussion disclosure behaviors. One of the most robust predictors of the likelihood that an athlete will disclose concussion symptoms to their coaches, athletic trainers, parents, or peers is what researchers term "social norms." The extant literature regarding social norms influencing concussion disclosure behaviors is inconsistent on how...
