Challenges facing the veterinary profession in Ireland: 1. clinical veterinary services
ConclusionsPossible solutions to improve veterinary referral and out-of-hours clinical services included clarifying the terms used in current norms and regulations (namely ‘referral’, ‘second opinion’, ‘24 h emergency care’ and ‘24 h cover’), improved communication (making the client aware of the different levels of veterinary care that are being offered, and transparent and full disclosure of clinical records), and the promotion of Continuing Veteri nary Education in communication, business management and ethical decision-making. These findings may help inform the Veterinary Council of Ireland about futu...

Proof of concept of faecal egg nematode counting as a practical means of veterinary engagement with planned livestock health management in a lower income country
ConclusionsHere we describe the potential value of faecal nematode egg counting as a platform for communicating with and gaining access to cattle keepers and their animals, respectively, in southern Malawi, with the aim of providing informative background knowledge and understanding that may aid in the establishment of effective veterinary services in an under-resourced community. Thoracolumbar epidural anaesthesia with 0.5% bupivacaine with or without methadone in goats
ConclusionsBupivacaine-methadone combination promoted longer-lasting analgesia in goats compared to bupivacaine alone when administered through an epidural catheter into the thoracolumbar space. (Source: Irish Veterinary Journal)

The prevalence, temporal and spatial trends in bulk tank equivalent milk fat depression in Irish milk recorded herds
ConclusionsA subpopulation of Irish herds experienced the condition of MFD. Descriptive analysis suggested spatial, temporal and animal level associations. This condition warrants further investigation. (Source: Irish Veterinary Journal)

A survey of free-ranging deer in Ireland for serological evidence of exposure to bovine viral diarrhoea virus, bovine herpes virus-1, bluetongue virus and Schmallenberg virus
ConclusionsThe results indicate a very low seroprevalence for both BVDV and BoHV-1 in the wild deer tested within the study and, are consistent with a very low prevalence in Ireland. While serological cross-reaction with cervid herpesviruses cannot be excluded, the results in both cases suggest that the presence of these viruses in deer is not a significant risk to their control and eradication from the cattle population. This is important given the ongoing programme to eradicate BVDV in Ireland and deliberations on a national eradication programme for BoHV-1. The SBV results show consistency with those reported from cattl...

Angiographic anatomy of the extracranial and intracranial portions of the internal carotid arteries in donkeys
ConclusionVeterinarians should be aware that considerable variation exists in the carotid arterial tree of donkeys and that this variation may differ markedly from that described in the horse. (Source: Irish Veterinary Journal)

An investigative framework to facilitate epidemiological thinking during herd problem-solving
AbstractVeterinary clinicians and students commonly use diagnostic approaches appropriate for individual cases when conducting herd problem-solving. However, these approaches can be problematic, in part because they make limited use of epidemiological principles and methods, which has clear application during the investigation of herd problems. In this paper, we provide an overview of diagnostic approaches that are used when investigating individual animal cases, and the challenges faced when these approaches are directly translated from the individual to the herd. Further, we propose an investigative framework to facilita...

The impact of removal of the seasonality formula on the eligibility of Irish herds to supply raw milk for processing of dairy products
ConclusionsThe modelled impact of such removal would be relatively minor, based on available data, regardless of the method used to calculate the 3-month rolling geometric mean. The focus of the current study was quite narrow, effectively from July to December 2013. Therefore, the results are an underestimate of the total number of herds liable for suspension during 2013. They may also underestimate the true percentage change in herds liable for suspension, with the removal of the seasonality formula. A national herd identifier was lacking from a sizeable percentage of the 2013 bulk tank SCC data, but will be needed if the...

Genetic basis of benzimidazole resistance in Teladorsagia circumcincta in Ireland
AbstractResistance to benzimidazole (BZ) anthelmintics is common in ovine nematodes of economic importance. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) at three positions in the isotype 1 β– tubulin gene have been associated with BZ resistance and molecular tests for the detection of BZ resistance have been developed. In order to determine if such tests are practicable in Ireland the polymorphisms associated with BZ resistance must be identified. To this end, BZ-resistant nematode s were recovered from four farms in Ireland. ResistantTeladorsagia circumcincta,Cooperia curticei andTrichostrongylus colubriformis were recovered,...

Efficacy of washing and disinfection in cattle markets in Ireland
ConclusionsMarkets are a potential reservoir for microbial contamination with a resultant increased risk of disease spread by cattle moving through markets into new herds, and carcass contamination for cattle moving directly to slaughter. Therefore, market managers need clear advice and guidance on the development of hygiene programmes that are suitable for use in livestock markets. (Source: Irish Veterinary Journal)

A nationwide survey of anthelmintic treatment failure on sheep farms in Ireland
ConclusionsDue to the significant difference among the anthelmintic classes for efficacy against ‘other trichostrongyles’ along with the high level of efficacy againstNematodirus spp., a genus for which anthelmintic resistance is rarely reported, it is concluded that anthelmintic resistance was responsible for the majority of the anthelmintic treatment failures observed. Ticks and Tick-borne diseases in Ireland
AbstractThroughout Europe interest in tick-borne agents is increasing, particularly with regard to those that can cause human disease. The reason for this is the apparent rise in the incidence of many tick-borne diseases (TBD ’s). While there has never been a national survey of ticks or TBD’s in Ireland, the trend here appears to be the reverse with a decline in the incidence of some agents seemingly associated with decreasing tick numbers particularly on agricultural land. In the absence of robust baseline data, how ever, this development cannot be confirmed. This review collates the limited information available from ...
