Do parent-reported early indicators predict later developmental language disorder? A Raine Study investigation
CONCLUSIONS: Parent reports of early indicators of DLD are well-intentioned and widely used. However, data from the Raine Study cohort suggest potential retrospective reporting bias in previous studies. We note that missing data for some indicators may have influenced the results. Implications for the impact of using early indicators as evidence to inform early identification of DLD are discussed.WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on the subject DLD is a relatively common childhood condition; however, children with DLD are under-identified and under-served. Individual variability in early childhood makes identific...

Prelinguistic communication complexity predicts expressive language in initial minimally verbal autistic children
CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: Our findings suggest that it may be beneficial to incorporate different complex communication behaviours into prelinguistic intervention targets for minimally verbal autistic children. The CCS hierarchies can be used as a reference for the intervention goals of minimally verbal autistic children. These findings highlight the importance of targeting gesture and vocalisation combinations when autistic children transition from single prelinguistic communication behaviours to multimodal behaviours.WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on this subject Children use eye gaze, gestures and vocalis...

Ensuring treatment fidelity in intervention studies: Developing a checklist and scoring system within a behaviour change paradigm
CONCLUSIONS: Results emphasise the importance of training quality, practice and reflective opportunities and clear materials to promote treatment fidelity. The construction of the checklist and scoring system was described in detail, informing the development of future checklists. After further trialling, the checklist can be used to ensure the M-DLS is delivered with high treatment fidelity in the comparison trial.WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on this subject Treatment fidelity is an essential component of intervention effectiveness and efficacy studies, ensuring the intervention is delivered as intended. It...

Evaluation of a pilot to introduce simulated learning activities to support speech and language therapy students' clinical development
CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: Student experience of simulation was positive. One of the key elements students found to support their clinical skills was the importance of the safe space; support for learning instead of correction led them to engage in active learning. Key barriers to simulation related to having sufficient prior knowledge, the skills of the facilitator, group size and the wider learning landscape of the programme. In response to this pilot, there are plans to continue developing this model of simulation and embed simulation across the programme, led by a sound pedagogical approach with clear preparation and ...

Mothers' and fathers' attitudes toward stuttering in the Middle East compared to Europe and North America
CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: The effect of geographic region and culture may predict sex-based differences among mothers' and fathers' attitudes toward stuttering; however, the clinical significance is unclear. Additional research is needed to better understand how children who stutter are affected by their parents' attitudes toward stuttering.WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on this subject The research clearly indicates that attitudes toward stuttering vary according to geographical region. Less clear is whether mothers and fathers from geographically diverse backgrounds hold different attitudes toward stutteri...

Collaborative working in speech and language therapy for children with DLD-What are parents' needs?
CONCLUSIONS & IMPLICATIONS: Parents want SLTs to invest time in collaborating with them. Parents need SLTs to empower them to become a collaborative partner and enable them to support their child in daily life. Parents need knowledge about the therapy process and diagnosis and skills in how to support their child's language development. Also, they need emotional support to feel secure enough to support their child, to ask questions to therapists and to bring up their own thoughts and opinions in therapy. Parents' needs are in line with collaborative working as described in literature, which underlines the importance of imp...
