Human performance and medical treatment during cold weather operations - synthesis of a symposium
Int J Circumpolar Health. 2023 Dec;82(1):2246666. doi: 10.1080/22423982.2023.2246666.ABSTRACTIn October 2022, the Human Factors and Medicine (HFM) panel of the NATO Science and Technology Organization convened a review of progress in military biomedical research for cold weather operations. This paper represents a summary of the research presentations and future directions. The importance of realistic training was an overarching theme. Many reported studies took advantage of cold weather training exercises to monitor soldiers' health and performance; these are valuable data, using winter exercises as a platform to gain fur...

Samis in the city. A qualitative study of mental health and well-being among Samis in Stockholm
In this study, we interviewed 25 Samis, recruited through convenience sampling in the Stockholm area, about their perceptions of health and well-being, the importance of the Sami background and culture, their views of mental health services and the need of adapting them to Sami needs. Throughout the process, the researchers collaborated closely with the Stockholm Sami Association, in an approach of participatory research. The interviews were analysed with thematic analysis. For the participants, a secure Sami identity and being treated with respect for their identity was seen as essential for mental health and well-being. ...

The variability of PNPLA3 gene as a potential marker of cold adaptation in Yakuts
In this study, we identified two major diplotypes [GG][GG] and [CG][GG]. The high frequency of the mutant rs738409: G variant in Yakuts may be an adaptation of the organism to low temperatures. The study of the adiponutringene may be an important key to understanding the mechanisms of adaptation to low temperatures and metabolic processes in the indigenous population of the North.PMID:37581274 | PMC:PMC10431738 | DOI:10.1080/22423982.2023.2246647 (Source: International Journal of Circumpolar Health)
