Larotrectinib as an Effective Therapy in Congenital Infantile Fibrosarcoma: Report of Two Cases
We present two patients with a congenital mass, one in the abdominal cavity (1-month-old) and the second in the left lower extremity respectively (2-months-old). In both cases, the clinical and radiological findings showed heterogeneous masses with rapidly progressive growth. MRI in the first patient exhibited an abdominal mass surrounding the aorta and inferior vena cava associated with a giant infrarenal aortic aneurysm. CT-guided biopsy was performed with pathological findings of fibrosarcoma and ETV6-NTRK3 gene fusion. The second patient underwent open biopsy also with histopathological diagnosis of fibrosarcoma and th...

When to Suspect DRUJ's Instability in Children? Case Report of a Rare Presentation of Distal Forearm Fractures
We report the case of a 2-year-old boy who presented the above-mentioned association of forearm fractures and compare our management with actual recommendations. We would recommend a low-suspicion threshold for DRUJ's instability in young children presenting with displaced distal metaphyseal ulnar fracture associated with distal radial buckle fracture. That suspicion should raise the necessity of appropriate treatment and follow-up. Resection of an Extraovarian Noniuteinized Thecoma in a 14-Year-Old Girl
We report the case of a 14-year-old girl who presented with sudden-onset abdominal pain, dysuria, and fever, as well as highly elevated serum inflammation parameters. Ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a large, inhomogeneous pelvic mass (16 cm × 9 cm × 13 cm) with indistinct margins, suggestive of an infiltrative malignant teratoma or sarcoma. Laparoscopy confirmed a large mass of unknown origin. In contrast to the infiltrative character seen on preoperative MRI, the tumor could be easily exteriorized and resected after conversion to laparotomy. Ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus rem...

Juvenile Xanthogranuloma as Differential Diagnosis of a Vulvar Mass: A Case Report
We present a 16-month-old girl with a 2 cm solid mass on her left labia majora, with four overlying cutaneous papules. After imaging tests, an excisional biopsy was programmed due to high malignancy suspicion. Histopathology of the mass and one of the papules was diagnostic for JXG. After a 12-month follow-up, the patient shows no signs of relapse or complication. Deep JXG is an uncommon entity in childhood and exceptional in the genital area. Therefore, it must be included in the differential diagnosis of a solid vulvar mass, especially if accompanying yellowish xanthomatous cutaneous lesions are present. [...] Georg Th...

Ventrally Fused Conjoined Twins (Omphaloischiopagus): A Roadmap to Successful Separation
In this report, we aim to share our experience with the successful separation of ventrally fused male conjoined twins (omphaloischiopagus). The case was thoroughly studied via preoperative cross-sectional imaging modalities (magnetic resonance imaging [MRI] and computed tomography [CT] angiography), complemented by data obtained from reviewing similar cases in the literature. A clear delineation of the complex anatomy was achieved preoperatively which proved to be well consistent with the operative findings. A detailed description of the operative procedure to divide/redistribute the shared abdominal/pelvic organs between ...

Tubular Duplication of the Esophagus in a Newborn, Treated by Thoracoscopy
We present a case of tubular esophageal duplication in a 3-day-old female newborn (38 weeks, 2,500 g) without concomitant abnormal development. Esophageal duplication was diagnosed based on the clinical picture, direct laryngoscopy, esophagography and computed tomography. The duplicated esophagus was resected by thoracoscopy leaving the orthotopic esophagus in place. Isolation from the pharynx was performed via a separate cervical incision. After a follow-up period of 20 months, the child returned to normal growth and development. [...] Georg Thieme Verlag KG Rüdigerstraße 14, 70469 Stuttgart, GermanyArticle in Thieme ...

Hindgut Duplication in an Infant with Omphalocele –Exstrophy–Imperforate Anus–Spinal Defects (OEIS) Complex
We describe a neonate with OEIS who was found to have fully duplicated blind-ending hindguts. Case Report A premature infant boy with OEIS underwent first-stage closure on day of life 6, which included excision of the omphalocele sac, separation of the cecal plate and bladder halves, tubularization of the cecal plate, hindgut rescue with end colostomy, and joining of the bladder halves. Cecal plate inspection revealed two hindgut structures that descended distally, one descended midline into the pelvis along the sacrum and the second laterally along the left border of the sacrum. Both lumens connected to the cecal p...

Battery Ingestion with Colonic Perforation after Colostomy Closure in a Toddler
We present the case of a 15-month-old male who underwent a colostomy takedown 2 months following a posterior sagittal anorectoplasty for imperforate anus. He recovered quickly, was advanced on his diet, and was discharged to home on postoperative day 3. On postoperative day 5 following the stoma closure, he presented with an acute abdomen, pneumoperitoneum and an abdominal X-ray that revealed a 21 mm disc battery in the left lower quadrant. He underwent exploration and the battery was found perforating the anastomosis. There was significant fibropurulent exudate and inflammation. The battery was removed, the anastomosis ...

Intraneural Ganglion of the Peroneal Nerve —A Rare Cause of Pediatric Peroneal Nerve Palsy: A Case Report
We present the case of a 14-year-old boy who presented in our outpatient clinic with a complaint of interdigital neuralgia between hallux and second toe, as well as left foot drop. MRI examination showed a hyperintense cystic distension of the common peroneal nerve measuring 130 mm × 5 mm extending from the poplitea to the anterior compartment of the leg. We performed microscopic decompression and neurolysis surgery. The cyst showed a sac-like distension at its distal end with connection to the tibiofibular joint and was resected. After 8 weeks, postoperatively, the boy claimed to be pain-free and slight recovery ...

Thoracoscopic Resection of a Foregut Duplication Cyst with the Use of a 5-mm Stapling Device in an Infant —A Case Report
European J Pediatr Surg Rep. 2022; 10: e30-e32 DOI: 10.1055/s-0042-1742713Esophageal foregut duplication cysts are a rare congenital anomaly predominantly diagnosed in children. With possible growth foregut duplication cysts may cause compression on thoracic or mediastinal structures, respectively. Due to the presence of ectopic gastric mucosa and its potential malignant alteration resection of foregut duplication cysts is recommended. More recently, the use of a thoracoscopic approach for resection has shown to be an advantageous alternative to a conventional open approach. A case of a complete thoracoscopic resection of ...

Writing a Case Report in Pediatric Surgery: A Comprehensive Guideline
European J Pediatr Surg Rep. 2022; 10: e13-e19 DOI: 10.1055/s-0041-1740935An effective case report delivers clear and valuable clinical or surgical information to the medical community. Case reports dealing with pediatric surgical issues raise the medical community's awareness of rare diseases, unusual presentations of common disorders, or novel surgical or nonsurgical treatment approaches. Thus, case reports contribute substantially to medical advance by sharing remarkable or unexpected findings. For this reason, case reports should be prepared with vigilance, and current conventions on good medial writing practice should...

Umbilical Cord Teratoma Presenting as Ruptured Omphalocele
We report on a girl who presented with a ruptured omphalocele and a 7 cm mass connected to the umbilicus, which we resected on the first day of life. Histology revealed mature umbilical cord teratoma . On the 29th day of life, a secondary laparotomy was necessary to address the associated intestinal malformations (megaduodenum, stenotic small bowel with duplication and malrotation). After a prolonged hospital stay, we discharged the patient in age-appropriate conditions. Antenatal diagnosis of an umbilical cord tumor can be challenging in the presence of an omphalocele. Given the high prevalence of associated malformatio...
