Epiphysiodesis and hemiepiphysiodesis : Physeal arrest and guided growth for the lower extremity
Orthopade. 2022 Mar 31. doi: 10.1007/s00132-022-04219-8. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe principals of growth arrest by epiphysiodesis and growth guidance by hemiepiphysiodesis are effective and powerful surgical techniques in pediatric orthopedics. These procedures can be used to correct leg length discrepancies as well as sagittal, coronal and oblique deformities. A differentiation is made between temporary and permanent techniques. The most significant advantage is that these techniques are minimally invasive and have low complication rates compared to acute osteotomy and gradual deformity correction. For optimal outc...

The role of the Internet as a source of medical information for orthopedic patients
CONCLUSION: The Internet as an informative digital health application in orthopedics is used intensively and is widely accepted by patients. While mistrust of orthopedic health information from the Internet has decreased, patient confidence in meaningful digital health information platforms has increased. The Internet is seen as a useful health information platform alongside medical advice.PMID:35352139 | DOI:10.1007/s00132-022-04238-5 (Source: Der Orthopade)

Spinal manipulation therapy in low back pain : Why? When? Where? How?
Orthopade. 2022 Apr;51(4):283-293. doi: 10.1007/s00132-022-04226-9. Epub 2022 Mar 25.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Manipulation and mobilisation for low back pain are presented in an evidence-based manner with regard to mechanisms of action, indications, efficacy, cost-effectiveness ratio, user criteria and adverse effects. Terms such as non-specific or specific are replaced by the introduction of "entities" related to possible different low back pain forms.EFFICACY: MM is effective for acute and chronic low back pain in terms of pain relief, recovery of function and relapse prevention. It is equally effective but less risky compare...

Scheuermann's disease
Orthopade. 2022 Mar 15. doi: 10.1007/s00132-022-04239-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTScheuermann's disease represents the second most common deformity of the growing spine after the various forms of scoliosis. In cases of early diagnosis and mild kyphotic deformity conservative treatment with a brace and physiotherapy shows very good results; however, in cases of neurologic deficits, curve progression despite conservative treatment and increasing pain symptoms with a Stagnara angle of more than 70-75°, surgical treatment is meaningful. The surgical strategy can include posterior spondylodesis with prior anterior release...
