The influence of occupational activity on diseases of the musculoskeletal system of the upper extremity
CONCLUSION: The prevalence of RC lesions shows a statistical correlation with the occupation performed depending on the occupational branches. In addition to occupational dependency, gender-specific work factors play a role. Shoulder pain in gainful employment should be considered in a more differentiated way. This should enable preventive measures to be taken in a targeted manner.PMID:34939146 | DOI:10.1007/s00132-021-04199-1 (Source: Der Orthopade)

Radiosynoviorthesis of the thumb's carpometacarpal joint
Orthopade. 2021 Dec 20. doi: 10.1007/s00132-021-04194-6. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRadiosynoviorthesis (RSO) is an established therapeutic method for the local treatment of pain in aseptic joint inflammation (e.g. arthritis, activated osteoarthritis, synovitis). RSO can be used for the treatment of synovial membrane inflammation of the finger joints such as the thumb's carpometacarpal joint. The beta emitter Erbium-169 (Er-169) is injected into the joint space, which irradiates the inflamed synovialis, thereby leading to fibrosis and obliteration of the pain receptors of the synovial membrane. The chances of success in...

Hemitrapeziectomy of the carpometacarpal joint of the thumb
Orthopade. 2021 Dec 20. doi: 10.1007/s00132-021-04193-7. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBACKGROUND: Hemiresection arthoplasty or partial trapeziectomy of the carpometacarpal joint of the thumb is a surgical option in stages 1-3 according to Eaton-Littler classification. Preservation of the intact scaphotrapeziotrapezoidal (STT) joint and maintenance of the length of the thumb is the advantage of this technique.TECHNIQUE: Technically, partial trapeziectomy is only slightly more complex compared to trapeziectomy with or without suspension. An interposition of autologous or allogeneic material is recommended; suspension arthro...

Experiences with arthroplasty of the basal joint of the thumb : The"mini-hip" gains ground
Orthopade. 2021 Dec 17. doi: 10.1007/s00132-021-04196-4. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe complex kinematics of the saddle joint has been a challenge in the development of trapeziometacarpal prostheses. The introduction of the dual-mobility design increases the range of motion and limits strains on the cup fixation. Therefore, rates of loosening and dislocation have been markedly reduced. Furthermore, several studies showed a similar relief of pain, range of movement and grip strength compared to the results of resection arthroplasty. The preservation of the length of the first ray as well as the more stable and functiona...

Conservative treatment options for symptomatic thumb trapeziometacarpal joint osteoarthritis
CONCLUSION: Basal thumb OA is a common and serious condition, which in the case of continuous pain should be diagnosed and treated adequately. A multi-modal therapeutic regimen with avoidance of repetitive intra-articular injections seems to provide the best long-term results.PMID:34910236 | DOI:10.1007/s00132-021-04195-5 (Source: Der Orthopade)
