Effective Manuscript Preparation and Submission
Authors have a wide range of journals to which they can submit their report for consideration for publication. One key to getting the journal editors to accept a report is that the manuscript is properly organized and in compliance with the journal ’s Guide for Authors. Critical Analysis of Retrospective Study Designs
Retrospective studies represent an often used research methodology in the podiatric scientific literature, with cohort studies and case series being two of the most prevalent designs. Choosing a retrospective method is often dependent on multiple factors, two of the most important being details of the research question to be explored and the sample size that can be acquired. When analyzing literature, a reader must understand how retrospective studies work to critically examine the methods, results, and discussions to determine if the conclusion is reasonable and might be applied to clinical practice. Current Concepts in Achilles Tendon Ruptures
The Achilles tendon has a high incidence of ruptures often occurring in weekend warriors and the aging population. Based on anatomic studies of the Achilles tendon, ruptures are commonly found in the watershed area proximal to the insertion site. Traditionally, treatment options included conservative therapy with immobilization and a prolonged non-weight-bearing phase versus surgical treatment. Surgical treatment can vary between open, minimally invasive, or percutaneous approaches. In more recent years, early functional rehabilitation with or without surgery has shown to have successful results. (Source: Clinics in Podiat...

Effective Case Reports and Small Case Series
Once the mainstay of scientific journals, in the age of evidence-based medicine, case reports and small series are now considered to represent a lower hierarchy in the medical decision-making process. However, case reports and small series represent the culmination of the time-honored traditional medical education teaching method with the descriptive case presentation. Despite being infrequently cited as references, case reports and small series still offer important contributions to patient care. The authors present a review of the strengths and weaknesses of case reports and small series and discuss ways to incorporate t...

Navigating the Challenges of Total Ankle Replacement
In recent years, total ankle replacement (TAR) has gained widespread acceptance as a surgical treatment for end-stage ankle arthritis. This shift is due to notable improvements in implant design, surgical instrumentation, technique, and surgeon expertise, resulting in high levels of patient satisfaction comparable to ankle fusion. Additionally, indications for TAR have expanded to include advanced deformities that were previously considered unsuitable for the procedure, making ankle arthrodesis the only option. Despite these advancements, TAR still carries a higher complication rate compared to other ankle surgeries. The c...

Shaping the Next Generation of Foot and Ankle Surgeons
Podiatric residency is only three years to gather as many experiences to understand the various aspects of foot and ankle care including, surgery, clinics, academics, and research to prepare them for the rest of their career. It is also important to find a supportive environment to maximize both education and wellness during these naturally challenging times. The three separate Kaiser Northern California Podiatric Residency Programs have worked diligently to provide a comprehensive opportunities and experiences in all aspects of podiatric resident education.
