Laser irradiation of photothermal precursors -  a novel approach to produce carbon materials for supercapacitors
ChemSusChem. 2024 Feb 1:e202301471. doi: 10.1002/cssc.202301471. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCarbon materials finds extensive utility across various industrial applications today. Nonetheless, the production processes for these materials continue to entail elevated temperatures, inert atmospheres, and toxic chemicals. The prevalent method for large-scale carbon material production, namely the pyrolysis of waste biomass and polymers, typically unfolds within the temperature range of 500 - 700 °C under nitrogen atmosphere. Unfortunately, this approach suffers from significant energy inefficiency due to substantial heat lo...

The Lifetime of Hydroxyl Radical in Realistic Fuel Cell Catalyst Layer
In this study, we have precisely determined that the lifetime of ⋅OH radicals can extend up to several seconds in realistic fuel cell catalyst layers. This finding reveals that ⋅OH radicals are capable of carrying out long-range attacks spanning at least a few centimeters during PEMFCs operation. Such insights hold great potential for enhancing our understanding of radical-mediated fuel cell degradation processes and promoting the development of durable fuel cell devices.PMID:38302692 | DOI:10.1002/cssc.202301428 (Source: ChemSusChem)

Solid Electrolyte Interphase on Lithium Metal Anodes
ChemSusChem. 2024 Jan 31:e202301777. doi: 10.1002/cssc.202301777. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLithium metal batteries (LMBs) represent the most promising next-generation high-energy density batteries. The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film on the lithium metal anode plays a crucial role in regulating lithium deposition and improving the cycling performance of LMBs. In this review, we comprehensively present the formation process of the SEI film, while elucidating the key properties such as electronic conductivity, ionic conductivity, and mechanical performance. Furthermore, various approaches for constructing the SE...

Hydrogen-transfer strategy in lignin refinery: Towards sustainable and versatile value-added biochemicals
ChemSusChem. 2024 Jan 31:e202301912. doi: 10.1002/cssc.202301912. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLignin, the most prevalent natural source of polyphenols on Earth, offers substantial possibilities for the conversion into aromatic compounds, which is critical for attaining sustainability and carbon neutrality. The hydrogen-transfer method has garnered significant interest owing to its environmental compatibility and economic viability. The efficacy of this approach is contingent upon the careful selection of catalytic and hydrogen-donating systems that decisively affect the yield and selectivity of the monomeric products res...

Unveiling the Activity and Mechanism Alterations by Pyrene Decoration on a Co(II) Macrocyclic Catalyst for CO < sub > 2 < /sub > Reduction
ChemSusChem. 2024 Jan 29:e202301113. doi: 10.1002/cssc.202301113. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMechanistic studies involving characterization of crucial intermediates are desirable for rational optimization of molecular catalysts toward CO2 reduction, while fundamental challenges are associated with such studies. Herein we present the systematic mechanistic investigations on a pyrene-appended CoII macrocyclic catalyst in comparison with its pyrene-free prototype. The comparative results also verify the reasons of the higher catalytic activity of the pyrene-tethered catalyst in noble-metal-free CO2 photoreduction with vari...
