A History of Suicide Attempt Is Associated with Increased Sympathetic Activation in Bipolar Disorder
CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that changes in the ANS in patients with BD and a history of suicide attempt are not restricted to pure vagally mediated HRV parameters, but rather signal a general ANS dysregulation. This ANS imbalance may be contributing to illness burden and cardiovascular disease. Further research on the relationship between ANS and suicidality in BD is needed.PMID:37583363 | DOI:10.1177/07067437231194334 (Source: Canadian Journal of Psychiatry)

Child Maltreatment History, Deployment-Related Traumatic Events, and Past 12-Month Cannabis Use Among Veterans in Canada
CONCLUSIONS: Child maltreatment histories and DRTEs increased the likelihood of past 12-month cannabis use among Canadian veterans. A history of child maltreatment, compared to DRTEs, indicated a more robust relationship. Understanding the links between child maltreatment, DRTEs, and cannabis use along with mental disorders and chronic pain conditions is important for developing interventions and improving health outcomes among veterans.PMID:37563976 | DOI:10.1177/07067437231192740 (Source: Canadian Journal of Psychiatry)

Does the Ranking Matter? A Retrospective Cohort Study Investigating the Impact of the < em > 2018 CANMAT and ISBD Guidelines for the Management of Patients with Bipolar Disorder < /em > Treatment Recommendations for Acute Mania on Rehospitalization Rates
CONCLUSIONS: Treatment with first-line medications was associated with lower 30-day rehospitalization rates and longer time-to-readmission. Physicians' adherence to treatments with higher-ranked evidence for efficacy, safety, and tolerability may improve bipolar disorder outcomes.PMID:37551100 | PMC:PMC10411363 | DOI:10.1177/07067437231156235 (Source: Canadian Journal of Psychiatry)
