Additive and interactive associations among body appreciation, self-compassion, and gender in understanding college students' health behaviors
In this study, we examined the additive and interactive associations of body appreciation and self-compassion with three health behaviors (physical activity, sleep, stress management activities) among 302 college students from a northeastern university in the United States. We further examined gender differences in key variables and in associations among body appreciation, self-compassion, and health behaviors. We found that body appreciation was independently associated with physical activity and stress management activities, with the association stronger for men than women. We also found that self-compassion was independ...

Birds of a feather flocking together on Instagram: How racially similar followers and followings on Instagram are linked to young women's body image
Body Image. 2023 Sep 24;47:101626. doi: 10.1016/j.bodyim.2023.101626. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn light of recent studies demonstrating the detrimental effects of social media use on young women's body image, we examined the racial composition of young women's Instagram followers, as well as the racial composition of the individuals in young women's followed Instagram accounts, in relation to their appearance ideals and body image. Based on social identity theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1979), we tested two main propositions. First, women who have racially similar followers and followed accounts will be more likely to i...

How exposure to body neutrality content on TikTok affects young women's body image and mood
This study examined the impact of exposure to TikTok body neutrality content on young women's body image and mood. The sample comprised 189 undergraduate women (Mage = 19.25, SD = 1.98) who were randomly assigned to view one of three compilation TikTok videos on body neutrality, thin ideal, or art. Controlling for pre-test measures, results showed that women in the body neutrality group reported higher functionality appreciation and body satisfaction than women in the thin ideal and art control groups. Higher levels of positive mood and fewer upward appearance comparisons were reported by women in the body neutrality group...

Validation of the Muscularity Bias Internalization Scale in Chinese women
Body Image. 2023 Sep 22;47:101627. doi: 10.1016/j.bodyim.2023.101627. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Muscularity Bias Internalization Scale (MBIS) captures an individual's endorsement of stereotypical beliefs about muscularity and engagement in self-stigmatizing evaluations about their muscularity. The MBIS has been validated in Chinese men and Lebanese men and women, showing strong internal consistency reliability and construct validity. Because muscularity-related body image concerns are present in Chinese women, there is a need for research to validate the MBIS in Chinese women. The present study examined the factor ...

Psychometric properties of a Dutch translation of the Functionality Appreciation Scale (FAS) among adults in the Netherlands
Body Image. 2023 Sep 20;47:101624. doi: 10.1016/j.bodyim.2023.101624. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Functionality Appreciation Scale (FAS; Alleva et al., 2017) measures functionality appreciation, the extent to which people appreciate their body for what it is able to do. We translated the FAS to Dutch and evaluated its factor structure and psychometric properties among 471 native Dutch speakers in the Netherlands (255 cisgender women, 204 cisgender men, 8 nonbinary, 1 "other," 3 "rather not say") who were between 18 and 85 years old. Participants completed the Dutch translation of the FAS, followed by questionnaires t...

Food insecurity is associated with muscle dysmorphia symptomatology among a sample of Canadian adolescents and young adults
Body Image. 2023 Sep 20;47:101628. doi: 10.1016/j.bodyim.2023.101628. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPrior research has documented the association between food insecurity and eating disorders, disordered eating behaviors, and body dissatisfaction. No known research has investigated whether food insecurity is associated with muscle dysmorphia symptomatology, which was the aim of this study. Data from 912 adolescents and young adults in Canada were analyzed. Linear regression analyses were used to determine the association between experiencing past year food insecurity and current muscle dysmorphia symptomatology. Among the s...

Validation and measurement invariance of a Korean version of the Body Appreciation Scale-2 in cisgender sexual minorities and heterosexual adults
Body Image. 2023 Sep 13;47:101625. doi: 10.1016/j.bodyim.2023.101625. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2) has been validated in various languages across samples with different characteristics. However, its validation and invariance based on sexual orientation in Korean samples have yet to be examined. The current study validated the psychometric properties of the BAS-2 in Korean sexual minorities, and examined measurement invariance between sexual minority and heterosexual individuals and between sexual minority cisgender women and men. Responses from 449 sexual minority and 400 heterosexual...
