Using a Dance/Movement Therapy-Based Wellness Curriculum: An Adolescent Case Study
This study examined the relationship between an adolescent female’s overall wellness, defined by quality of life, and her participation in a dance/movement therapy (DMT)-based holistic wellness curriculum. The curriculum focused on the topics of nutrition, mindfulness, movement, body image, and friendships. Research indicates that the curriculum topics, holistic wellness models, and DMT are each relatively effective for work with adolescent females, but their combination had yet to be explored using the format of the current study. Quantitative and qualitative data were gathered using the Youth Quality of Life-Research V...

The Dance of Cultural Identity: Exploring Race and Gender with Adolescent Girls
This article examines the use of embodied narrative, a movement-based interpretation of narrative identity theory, with adolescent participants to create a performance piece centered on the question: What does it mean to be a girl in the twenty-first century? The three reasons for using dance in this project were: (a) to facilitate understanding of one’s identity through movement as narrative; (b) to gather and analyze qualitative data through the vehicle of movement; and (c) to disseminate the findings of the project in an informative and easily accessed performance format. Community-based-participatory-research (CBPR) ...

The Lived Experience of Dance/Movement Therapists Working with Patients with Eating Disorders
Abstract This qualitative study highlighted the lived experiences of five dance/movement therapists who work with patients diagnosed with eating disorders. Using a phenomenological research approach, participants’ lived experiences were explored through semi-structured interviews and seven themes were developed using Kvale’s interview analysis. Findings also highlighted somatic countertransference as identified through differing body tensions as well as a need for constant self-care among participants. Implications highlighted how essential it is to bring the body of the client and the body of the c...
