Selective electrooxidation glycerol to lactic acid coupled with hydrogen production over a cooperative BiOx/Au catalyst
AbstractUtilizing sustainable electrocatalysis to upcycle glycerol (GLY; the by-product of biodiesel) to lactic acid (LA; the key monomers for biodegradable polymer) is an efficient way to reduce the cost of biodiesel, which is also consistent with the waste-to-wealth principle. However, current research still suffers from issues of low LA selectivity (<80%), especially at high current density. Herein, we designed a cooperative catalyst by modifying BiOx nanolayers on gold nanoparticles (BiOx/Au), achieving high LA selectivity (82%) at high current density (226  mA cm−2 at 1.05  V vs. RHE), outperforming most of...

Optimal retrofitting of conventional oil refinery into sustainable bio ‐refinery under uncertainty
This article focuses on a novel optimization problem to retrofit a conventional fossil-based refinery into a hybrid biomass-based refinery. A mixed-integer linear programming model, which considers a 10-year-long retrofit planning along with operational constraints in each year, is formulated. The problem is extended to a multistage stochastic programming model to handle both endogenous and exogenous uncertainties, and solved through a series of two-stage stochastic programming subproblems. Furthermore, a Lagrangean decomposition algorithm is implemented to solve such a problem. By determining whether to add new units or r...

Ligand ‐engineered Zr‐MOF membranes with fast water transport channels for alcohol–water separation
In this study, we report a high-valence Zr-MOF membrane with high stability and tunable pore microenvironment, prepared using a mixed-ligand strategy based on fumarate (fum) and 2-methylfumarate (mes) ligands for the pervaporation dehydration of alcohols. The introduction of a methyl group in the ligand side chain narrowed the aperture size while balancing the hydrophilicity, thus facilitating the fast and selective permeation of water over alcohol molecules. The resulting mes/fum-Zr-MOF membrane with ames content of 30% displayed excellent butanol/water separation performance with total flux of 5226  g−1·m−2·h−1...

Kinetic study on the reaction between CO2 and tertiary amine catalyzed by zinc(II) aza ‐macrocyclic complexes
AbstractIn this work, the kinetics study on the reaction between CO2 and tertiary  amine catalyzed by zinc(II)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane complexes (CM) and zinc(II)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane complexes (CN) was carried out in a stopped-flow device. The effects of the catalyst concentration, type of tertiary amines, and temperature on the reaction rate (ν) and catalytic activity (φ) were studied. It was found that the catalyst concentration, tertiary amine with higher pKa, and temperature had positive effects onν.ν inN-methyl diethanolamine solution with 10.0  mol m−3 CM and CN were 16.62 and 26.05 fo...

Feature analysis of generic AI models for CO2 equilibrium solubility into amines systems
AbstractReported models have disadvantages such as poor prediction accuracy and time-consuming. And they can not reflect the impact of chemical reactions on CO2 solubility. To compensate for these deficiencies, parameters representing operational parameters, physical properties, chemical properties, and molecular properties are introduced as input variables. A series of models are constructed by three algorithms: back propagation neural network, radial basis function neural network, and random forest. The model with the best prediction performance is level OPCM (RBFNN), with the AARE of only 1.52%. By ranking the importanc...

Retention amount and flow behavior of droplets on cross ‐fiber intersections during coalescence separation
AbstractCross fibers at different angles are essential for enhancing the separation of emulsions as the basic structure in fiber fillers. In this article, the retention and detachment process of droplets on fiber intersection were investigated using high-speed camera technology to explore the critical volume, slip path and droplet oscillation. The results indicate that the critical volume retained on the intersection is significantly affected by the fiber slope, cross angle between fibers, and liquid viscosity. A droplet-fiber interfacial force balance model is established to predict the critical volume and the tilt angle ...

Magnetic resonance imaging of trickle flow
This article employs Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) to characterize the three-dimensional distribution of the two-phase trickle flow within a slender tube. Three quantities are characterized: gas-liquid-solid distribution, particle wetting efficiency, and the flow field. Structure and flow MRI images are processed to calculate these quantities. Additionally, a novel postprocessing technique is introduced to determine the liquid distribution over individual particle surfaces. This distribution is determined at several axial and radial positions. (Source: AIChE Journal)
