Ru ‐supported Cu nanowire catalyst enabling to suppress C–C coupling for high‐selectivity ethylamine electrosynthesis
AbstractElectrochemical acetonitrile hydrogenation compared with thermocatalytic hydrogenation provides a potential route to produce ethylamine in mild conditions. It is challenging to suppress the C –C coupling for improving ethylamine selectivity. Here, Ru-supported Cu nanowire catalysts (Ru-Cu NWs) are designed to achieve nearly 100% specific selectivity of ethylamine without coupling byproducts. In situ vibrational spectroscopy and electron spin resonance results reveal that the Ru-Cu NWs provide a high active adsorption hydrogen (H*) coverage at the electrified interface so that the imine intermediates are more readi...

Obtaining highly stable Td ‐Co(II) site by coupling hydrothermal method and CO2 introduction for propane dehydrogenation
AbstractThe preparation of Co-based catalysts with a single, highly dispersed active site is challenging and crucial for the high-performance propane dehydrogenation (PDH) owing to harsh reaction conditions. Herein, the synergetic strategies including catalyst hydrothermal treatment and CO2 introduction are adopted to realize the highly dispersed and stable Td-Co(II) site and applied for PDH. According to systematic characterizations and catalytic performance evaluation, the facial hydrothermal treatment improves the C3H6 formation rate from 456 to 771  mmol C3H6 gCo−1 h−1 and catalyst stability via the transform...

A Monte ‐Carlo approach for the simulation of microbial population dynamics in an heterogeneous scale‐down bioreactor
AbstractPopulation heterogeneity is due to intrinsic and extrinsic noises; cell to cell variability is related to cell partitioning at division and external forcing by the environment. In this article, a Monte-Carlo calculation of integral source terms is coupled to a compartment approach. The biological phase is represented by an ensemble of discrete particles which are equipped with a coarse-grained model that describes the intracellular response to extracellular conditions. The redistribution of cell properties at division generates unbalanced cells and introduces additional time scales into the population dynamics. Usi...

ZSM ‐5 zeolite incorporated flow battery membranes with regulated pore channels for high proton conduction
AbstractFast proton conduction plays an essential role in ion conductive membranes (ICMs) for energy conversion and storage technologies, but the demand for low reactive species permeation always limits further enhancement in proton transport rate. Herein, an ICM incorporating ZSM-5 zeolite with optimized physicochemical property of pore channels was developed to achieve highly conductive ion transport via regulating the silicon-aluminum atomic (Si/Al) ratio of ZSM-5. Benefiting from the regulation of pore channels of zeolites, the proton conductivity of the pristine membrane was remarkably improved to 1.7-fold. As expecte...

Enhancement of separation performance for ofloxacin enantiomers by a biphasic recognition chiral extraction system
AbstractDespite greatly improved separation performance towards many mixtures, utilizing biphasic recognition chiral extraction (BRCE) systems in enantiomer separation remains challenging due to inadequate comprehension of chiral recognition and biphasic synergism mechanisms. In this work, using ofloxacin enantiomers as a case study, separation performance of BRCE system is systematically examined from experimental and theoretical aspects. The BRCE system, comprising di-p-toluoyl-l-tartaric acid andβ-cyclodextrin as hydrophobic and hydrophilic selectors, achieves maximum enantioselectivity and enantiomeric excess values o...

Selective electrooxidation glycerol to lactic acid coupled with hydrogen production over a cooperative BiOx/Au catalyst
AbstractUtilizing sustainable electrocatalysis to upcycle glycerol (GLY; the by-product of biodiesel) to lactic acid (LA; the key monomers for biodegradable polymer) is an efficient way to reduce the cost of biodiesel, which is also consistent with the waste-to-wealth principle. However, current research still suffers from issues of low LA selectivity (<80%), especially at high current density. Herein, we designed a cooperative catalyst by modifying BiOx nanolayers on gold nanoparticles (BiOx/Au), achieving high LA selectivity (82%) at high current density (226  mA cm−2 at 1.05  V vs. RHE), outperforming most of...

Optimal retrofitting of conventional oil refinery into sustainable bio ‐refinery under uncertainty
This article focuses on a novel optimization problem to retrofit a conventional fossil-based refinery into a hybrid biomass-based refinery. A mixed-integer linear programming model, which considers a 10-year-long retrofit planning along with operational constraints in each year, is formulated. The problem is extended to a multistage stochastic programming model to handle both endogenous and exogenous uncertainties, and solved through a series of two-stage stochastic programming subproblems. Furthermore, a Lagrangean decomposition algorithm is implemented to solve such a problem. By determining whether to add new units or r...

Ligand ‐engineered Zr‐MOF membranes with fast water transport channels for alcohol–water separation
In this study, we report a high-valence Zr-MOF membrane with high stability and tunable pore microenvironment, prepared using a mixed-ligand strategy based on fumarate (fum) and 2-methylfumarate (mes) ligands for the pervaporation dehydration of alcohols. The introduction of a methyl group in the ligand side chain narrowed the aperture size while balancing the hydrophilicity, thus facilitating the fast and selective permeation of water over alcohol molecules. The resulting mes/fum-Zr-MOF membrane with ames content of 30% displayed excellent butanol/water separation performance with total flux of 5226  g−1·m−2·h−1...
