Psychological pain and sociodemographic factors classified suicide attempt and non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents
This study aimed to utilize machine learning to explore the psychological similarities and differences between suicide attempt (SA) and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), with a particular focus on the role of psychological pain. A total of 2385 middle school students were recruited using cluster sampling. The random forest algorithm was used with 25 predictors to develop classification models of SA and NSSI, respectively, and to estimate the importance scores of each predictor. Based on these scores and related theories, shared risk factors (control feature set) and distinct risk factors (distinction feature set) were selec...

Predicting the intention to receive the COVID-19 booster vaccine based on the health belief model
Acta Psychol (Amst). 2024 Apr 16;246:104254. doi: 10.1016/j.actpsy.2024.104254. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCOVID-19 vaccine boosters are recommended because the protection provided by previous doses eventually decreases, posing a threat to immunity. Some people, however, remain hesitant or unwilling to get vaccinated. The present study sought to investigate factors associated with the intention to receive the COVID-19 booster vaccine based on (1) the constructs of the Health Belief Model, and (2) trust in healthcare workers and science. A sample of 165 adults with two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine were recruited using c...

The association between childhood adverse experiences and internet addiction: A meta-analysis
In conclusion, this study sheds light on the significant association between ACEs and IA, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions and preventive measures. Future research could delve into specific interventions aimed at mitigating the impact of ACEs on IA, such as cognitive-behavioral therapies or metacognitive therapy interventions. Additionally, investigating cultural factors that may influence this association could provide valuable insights into tailored approaches for different populations. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for developing effective strategies to address IA and its underlying factors.PMID...

Win-win or lose-lose: Children prefer the form of equality
Acta Psychol (Amst). 2024 Apr 15;246:104251. doi: 10.1016/j.actpsy.2024.104251. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn middle childhood, children's sense of fairness further develops, they are willing to pay a cost to maintain equality. Win-win and lose-lose are two forms of equality. Win-win equality refers to both parties maximizing benefits, while lose-lose equality means both parties incurring the maximum loss. Win-win equality allows third party upholding fairness to gain more reputational benefits without the violator being punished, embodying the principle of "benefiting oneself without harming others". On the other hand,...

A parental burnout modelling based on perfectionism mediated through self-compassion in parents of students suffering from specific learning behavioral disorder
Acta Psychol (Amst). 2024 Apr 15;246:104227. doi: 10.1016/j.actpsy.2024.104227. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe association between parental burnout and perfectionism, and whether and to what extent it is mediated by self-compassion, in case of mothers of children with Specific Learning Disorder (SLD) were rarely investigated in the related literature. To fill the gap felt, the present study aimed at providing a model for self-compassion, parental burnout, and perfectionism. The participants were 305 mothers of children with SLD, from Hamedan province, Iran, who had been referred to the relevant treatment centers between...

Examining the role of the visuospatial sketchpad in children's math calculation skills using Baddeley and Hitch's model of working memory
This study did not use a longitudinal design and so we cannot conclude that weak visuospatial memory impedes the development of math calculation skills. Future research should use longitudinal designs and investigate other types of math skills.PMID:38615594 | DOI:10.1016/j.actpsy.2024.104246 (Source: Acta Psychologica)

Activating argumentation schema to write argumentatively and tactfully
This study explores the effectiveness of QQ group discussion, a kind of CSCL mediation most popular in China, in argumentative writing by means of quasi-experiment and interview. Fifty-six second-year college students in an English Department participated in this study. The experimental group were asked to have a pre-writing QQ group discussion on a disputable topic while the control group had an in-class face-to-face discussion (a regular teaching method for English majors). Content analysis of the essays was made to investigate the use of Counterargument elements, Qualifier and Concession. The results show that the two g...

The priming of stimulus-elicited involuntary mental imagery
Acta Psychol (Amst). 2024 Apr 13;246:104250. doi: 10.1016/j.actpsy.2024.104250. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPercepts, urges, and even high-level cognitions often enter the conscious field involuntarily. The Reflexive Imagery Task (RIT) was designed to investigate experimentally the nature of such entry into consciousness. In the most basic version of the task, participants are instructed not to subvocalize the names of visual objects. Involuntary subvocalizations arise on the majority of the trials. Can these effects be influenced by priming? In our experiment, participants were exposed to an auditory prime 300 ms before...
