Characterization of disinfectant susceptibility profiles among clinical isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii in Ardabil, Iran
This study evaluated the antimicrobial activity of four commonly used disinfectants; triclosan, chlorhexidine digluconate, benzalkonium chloride, and formaldehyde against Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates. This study also determined the prevalence and association of efflux pumps encoding genes qacE, qacED1, emrA, and aceI with tolerance to disinfectants. A total of 100 A. baumannii isolates were included in the current study. The antimicrobial disinfectants' minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined using an agar dilution method. Genes involved in resistance to disinfectants were investigated by PCR met...

Genotype distribution of hepatitis C virus in the  province of Gaziantep, a 10-year evaluation
Acta Microbiol Immunol Hung. 2023 Oct 11;70(4):348-352. doi: 10.1556/030.2023.02137. Print 2023 Dec 7.ABSTRACTHepatitis C virus (HCV) can cause both acute and chronic hepatitis infections. Gaziantep is located southeast part of Turkey and has a border with Syria. More than 400,000 Syrian refugees live in Gaziantep. The aim of this study was to evaluate distribution of HCV genotypes among Syrian patients and in people who inject drugs.Serum samples form 1,628 individuals (786 female, 842 male) which were sent to our laboratory for genotyping between January 2013 and December 2022, were analyzed retrospectively. Three differ...

High-risk clonal lineages among extended-spectrum β-lactamase producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae from urban and rural stagnant water samples in Tunisia
This study sought to investigate the occurrence and subsequently to characterize extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae from urban and rural stagnant water samples during the wet season (December to February) in several regions of northern Tunisia. From 56 stagnant water samples, 14 ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae were recovered, including 9 Escherichia coli, 3 Klebsiella pneumoniae, and 2 K. oxytoca. Most isolates were multidrug-resistant, with ESBL production primarily encoded by blaCTX-M-15 (n = 8) and blaCTX-M-1 (n = 4) followed by blaCTX-M-55 (n = 1) and blaTEM-26 (n = 1). One K. pneumo...

Molecular characteristics of carbapenem-resistant Raoultella ornithinolytica
In this study, three CR-ROR strains were found to have a higher level of resistance to antibacterial agents and carried multiple antibiotic resistance genes. The CR-ROR strains carrying multiple antibacterial resistant genes require the stringent monitoring to avoid the spread of multidrug-resistant bacterial strains.PMID:38063919 | DOI:10.1556/030.2023.02123 (Source: Acta Microbiologica et Immunologica Hungarica)

Hypervirulent Klebsiella pneumoniae: An update on epidemiology, detection and antibiotic resistance
Acta Microbiol Immunol Hung. 2023 Dec 4;70(4):278-287. doi: 10.1556/030.2023.02186. Print 2023 Dec 7.ABSTRACTKlebsiella pneumoniae is a major human pathogen as it is responsible for various infections. In the past years hypervirulent K. pneumoniae (hvKP) emerged and disseminated worldwide. In this review a summary will be given about epidemiology, detection and antibiotic resistance of hypervirulent K. pneumoniae. A common feature of hypervirulent K. pneumoniae is a combined expression of several virulence factors. A mucoviscosus phenotype, certain capsulare serotypes (e.g.: K1, K2, K28, K47, K63) together with additional ...

Role of periodontal pathogens in atherosclerotic plaque development and progression: An overview
Acta Microbiol Immunol Hung. 2023 Nov 16. doi: 10.1556/030.2023.02145. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAtherosclerosis is a progressive disease marked by the accumulation of lipids and fibrous components in the large arteries. It is one of the primary causes of heart disease and stroke. Periodontal diseases encompass conditions like gingivitis and periodontitis, which are multifactorial diseases associated with dysbiotic plaque biofilms that trigger an immune-inflammatory host response, eventually resulting in the destruction of periodontal tissues. Links between periodontal disease and atherosclerosis may be based on direct...
