Privacy and Its Discontents
Clark Neily andNorbert MichelThere ’s an iconic scene in the movieSpinal Tap where lead guitarist Nigel Tufnel, reacting to a production error that has rendered the band ’s latest record album an unadorned black square, exclaims, “There’s something about this that’s so black, it’s like, how much more black could this be? And the answer is none, none more black.” Last Wednesday’sop ‐ed in theNew York Times by self ‐styled “digital ethics” adviser and privacy‐skeptic Reid Blackman evokes a similar response: How much more wrong could this piece be? The answer is none, none more wro...

America, Don ’t Be the Anti‐Network State: Crypto Policy for the Leader of the Free World
Jack SoloweyEntertaining crackdowns on Americans ’ voluntary use of software has been a theme of policy leaders’ response tofraud charges at centralized crypto exchange FTX. Following last week ’s FTX hearing, Senate Banking Committee Chairman Sherrod Brown (D-OH)floated the idea of “maybe banning” crypto. Earlier this month, Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chairman Rostin Behnamconsidered how the federal government might help offshore crypto exchanges that block U.S. users “protect those firewalls.”Banning open-source software and barring the doors to the global Internet is no way to lead the free world...

Modified mRNA Demonstrates 10-Fold Protein Production
Scientists at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology came up with a technique to increase the efficiency and potentially the efficacy of mRNA therapeutics. mRNA molecules have what is called a poly-A tail, which is basically a string of adenine nucleotides at one end. These researchers discovered that by replacing some of these nucleotides in the mRNA tail with cytidine, a cytosine base with a ribose sugar attached, that they could enhance the resulting protein production of the mRNA and increase its stability and life-span. The technique could lead to more effective mRNA therapies and vaccines, potentially enablin...

Explorations in French Health Care! (Or what I did on my vacation!)
By MATTHEW HOLT This is a personal story about this blog’s publisher (me!) but it has just enough health care stuff to keep it relevant! This year I finally got invited on the annual mountain bike ride run by my friend JB and his ex Taiwan/Hong Kong buddies. I’ve actually been practicing and training most of the summer and arrived pretty confident even though I knew it would be tough. This edition is in Provence in France. Before it all went wrong And then…..2 hours in on the first day it turns out I was too confident… Back in 2002 I smashed my knee snowboarding into a tree. When I tol...

Soft Robot Biodegrades Inside Body
Researchers at the City University of Hong Kong have developed a magnetic soft millirobot that can grab and release objects, and move around by rolling. The device can be controlled using magnetic fields, and consists of a biodegradable gelatin and iron oxide microparticles. The technology has significant potential as a minimally invasive drug delivery system, perhaps in the gastrointestinal tract, and may even lead to soft robots that can carry out surgical procedures within the body. One of the nicest features of the device is its rapid biodegradation over the space of a couple of days, which means that it may not ha...

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
August 18, 2022 Edition-----The main issue, probably of the year, is the increasing tension across the Taiwan Strait with all sorts of worries about how conflict can be avoided and prosperity maintained at a reasonable level as tensions continue. And hopefully ease. The impact of climate change in Europe is really becoming obvious and worrying. I am not sure just how a realistic response is possible in any reasonable time.In OZ the PM has come back after a week off to have the Chinese Ambassador tell us we are a vassal and to just shut up and behave. Astonishing and serious stuff IMVHO.-----Major Issues.-----https://www.smh...

How Common Has Private Currency Been?
Lawrence H. WhiteRecently, an investment advisor and Bitcoin proponenttweeted the claim that “[f]or most of human history” the “[s]eparation of money and state was the norm, even if the state stamped their ruler’s face on the coin.” Some strong disagreement (and some strong support) followed the tweet. The mostcategorical criticism asserted: “Money is and always has been a creation of government. ” A somewhat milder challenge asserted that “Private moneys have seldom been main media of exchange.”First, let ’s clarify the object of the discussion. If we define “money” the way that economist...

The Future Of Vision And Eye Care
3D printed digital contact lenses, bionic eye implants, augmented reality: the future of vision and eye care is full of science fiction-sounding innovations. Here is where digital health will take ophthalmology in the future! More than 80 percent of perception comes through vision Researchers estimate that 80-85 percent of our perception, learning, cognition, and activities are mediated through vision. Compared to that, our hearing only processes 11 percent of information, while smell 3.5 percent, touch 1.5 percent and taste 1 percent. Don’t you think that’s possible? Renowned scholars, L.D. Ros...

If You ’ ve Seen One Robot – Wait, What?
BY KIM BELLARD If You’ve Seen One Robot – Wait, What? We think we know robots, from the old school Robbie the Robot to the beloved R2-D2/C-3PO to the acrobatic Boston Dynamics robots or the very human-like Westworld ones.   But you have to love those scientists: they keep coming up with new versions, ones that shatter our preconceptions.  Two, in particular, caught my attention, in part because both expect to have health care applications, and in part because of how they’re described. Hint: the marketing people are going to have some work to do on the names.  ———– Let’s...

The (sort of, partial) Father mRNA Vaccines Who Now Spreads Vaccine Misinformation (Part 1)
By DAVID WARMFLASH, MD Robert W. Malone, MD MS, is a physician-scientist who will live in infamy, thanks to the Joe Rogan Experience Podcast boosting his visibility this past December regarding his criticism of COVID-19 vaccines, particularly the mRNA vaccines (Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech). Subsequently, Malone was banned from Twitter, which further boosted his celebrity status. Describing himself as the inventor of mRNA vaccine technology, he has been reaching a growing number of people with a narrative that makes COVID-19 vaccination sound scary. We cannot embed clips from the Rogan interview, which lasted about three...
