Repair of diaphragmatic hernias: Retrospective analysis of 70 cases
CONCLUSION: DH is an important cause of morbidity and mortality due to abdominal organ strangulation and pulmonary and cardiac complications. When a DH is diagnosed, laparoscopic or open surgery is the treatment that should be preferred.PMID:38073460 | DOI:10.14744/tjtes.2023.98029 (Source: Turkish Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery : TJTES)

Is weight trajectory a better marker of wound complication risk than BMI in hernia patients with obesity?
ConclusionWeight loss may be a better indicator of a patient ’s risk for wound morbidity following TAR than BMI alone, as weight loss of at least 3% resulted in fewer SSIs despite similar BMIs at time of surgery. Further research into optimal timing and amount of weight loss, as well as effects on long-term outcomes, is needed to confirm these findings.Graphical abstract (Source: Surgical Endoscopy)

Comment on: Hiatal Hernia Repair after Previous Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric bypass
I read with interest the paper by Vaughan et al. entitled “Hiatal Hernia Repair after Previous Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y Gastric bypass” [1]. In this paper, the authors evaluated patients who had surgery at a Cleveland Clinic facility for hiatal hernias (HH) that presented after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). This is the largest series in the literature to date dealing with this problem. There were 44 patients over a 12-year period and the average time to operation for hiatal hernia repair (HHR) was 59 months after the index procedure. Hernia Active Living Trial (HALT): an exercise intervention in people with a parastomal hernia or bulge
CONCLUSIONS: A clinical pilates-based exercise programme for people with a parastomal hernia can bring both direct and indirect improvements to a patient's hernia management, sense of wellbeing and day-to-day life. Individuals with a hernia should be informed about the need for, and value of, exercise to strengthen core muscles, as part of their non-surgical options for self-management.PMID:38060393 | DOI:10.12968/bjon.2023.32.22.S4 (Source: British Journal of Nursing)

Interdisciplinary aspects of abdominal and plastic surgery  - what does the (abdominal) surgeon need to know?
Innov Surg Sci. 2023 Sep 21;8(2):103-112. doi: 10.1515/iss-2023-0042. eCollection 2023 Jun.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: The aim was to reflect the established interdisciplinary aspects of general/abdominal and plastic surgery by means of a narrative review. Methods: (i) With specific references out of the medical literature and (ii) own clinical and perioperative as well as operating technical and tactical management experiences obtained in surgical daily practice, we present a choice of options for interdisciplinary cooperation that could be food of thought for other surgeons.CONTENT: - Decubital ulcers require pressure relieve,...
