How the Brain Makes Meaning (BSP 94)
In his first book Louder Than Words: The New Science of How the Mind Makes Meaning linguist Benjamin K. Bergen manages to make a large amount of scientific research both accessible and entertaining. Dr. Bergen is one of the new breed of linguists who are working with neuroscientists to explore some of the key questions about langage and the brain. When I interviewed him recently (BSP 94) we talked about the challenges of writing about how science is really done, but we focused on one of the key questions facing cognitive neuroscience: how does the brain understand language?Free Episode Transcript (Read or download ...

Selling Sickness: The War Against the Medical-Industrial Complex
I am a fish out of water here at the 2013 Selling Sickness conference in Washington, D.C. Although the theme of the conference -- "People Before Profits" -- resonates with a lot of public relations rhetoric of big pharma companies (e.g., "Merck. Where patients come first"; see here), the speakers and attendees at this conference REALLY mean it!I'm an outsider here because I am a pharma "insider" in their view. And, as keynote speaker Sidney Wolfe, MD (Public Citizen) said: "we [they] are at war with the pharmaceutical industry." Or maybe he said the "medical-industrial complex," which was how a number of speakers character...

Celebrate Heart Month With These Tasty Tips
Earlier this week I was on Let’s Talk Live in DC and WBAL in Baltimore sharing some easy and delicious ways you can eat your way to a healthy heart. No matter what time of day — breakfast, lunch, dinner or snacks — I shared foods that will keep your heart and belly happy all day long. You can watch both videos below, but check out below for a few highlights too. Tip #1: Go for Oats  Research has shown that consuming 3g/day of oat soluble fiber – as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol – may help reduce the risk of heart disease. “Perfect Portions” is a fabulous new inst...

Guest Post: The Ginger.io Effect.
I've seen mentions of this Ginger.io service in different parts of the DOC (like over at Scott's blog house, and Kim's, and then over at the New York Times).  I've done some research on their company, and for people who don't mind having the location services, etc. turned on for their phones, it's an interesting way of collecting data to provide insight on health habits (although for me, I'm not so much about sharing every data point of my day).  So when Peter (the account manager for Ginger.io) contacted me to see if he could help spread the word about this data-driven service, I was happy to help. Mostly beca...

5 Tips for Staying Upbeat During Winter
During the winter months, when the sun is down before dinner time and the weather is bitterly cold (or constantly raining in the case of my adopted city of Seattle), just stepping outside can seem downright unappealing. But spending more time at home doesn’t have to result in a nasty case of cabin fever. Here are a few tips that I’ve found useful for making the most of the chilly season. Pick Up a New Hobby Winter is the perfect time to develop a new hobby or learn a craft that you’ll be able to enjoy for years to come. Host a knitting night with some like minded friends. Or stay home, throw on some music, and disco...

A “Nutrition Prescription” For Fighting Cold and Flu
Medicine isn’t the only way to fight off cold and flu. Food can be your medicine too. I was on Let’s Talk Live recently sharing a nutrition prescription to help you stay healthy. Below are some highlights from the segment. There are basically two big tricks to beating winter “bugs”: reducing inflammation and boosting immunity.  So whether you’re trying to prevent sickness or recover ASAP, all the foods I mention below will help you. Spicy Lamb Korma I created this recipe for www.leanonlamb.com – it’s a spicy lamb korma that you make in the slow cooker. Lamb is nutrient rich, and packed ...

Easy as plums
I cut up a couple of punnets of plums. (I didn’t take the stones out, because life is short, and the people who will be eating them – ie mainly Alan and I – are quite capable of taking them out.) I broke a couple of cinnamon sticks over them. I added a sprinkle of ginger and drizzled some honey on top. I added a glug of orange extract, which is not strictly necessary, but does add a certain je ne sais quoi. I put the dish in the oven, at 180 degrees for half an hour, but that was really only because the oven was already on, cooking parkin, and the parkin had half an hour to go. The oven part is not an exa...

GINGER.io – Contribute to Science with a Nurse in Your Pocket
Today I’m hosting a guest post from Peter Smith, Account Manager at Ginger.io. They won Sanofi’s Data Design Diabetes Innovation contest in 2011, and are partnering with Sanofi to bring this interesting technology to more people living with diabetes. Maybe the best way to explain the concept behind Ginger.io is to quote from a great article at Co.EXIST by Ariel Schwartz. “Your smartphone is an incredibly powerful tool–one that we mostly waste by just using to make phone calls and check email. But it’s really an advanced bundle of sensors that is with us nearly 24 hours a day, collecting massive am...

One of my nine
Every time I listen to Desert Island Discs, which is as often as possible, I start to wonder what I’d choose in the hypothetical situation where (a) I am on a desert island which is mysteriously equipped with the ability to play records, or (b) I am asked to appear on ‘Desert Island Discs’ myself. After a little bit of thinking about this, I have to go and have a coffee and something nibbly, as I am so exhausted by the effort. But there’s one disc that would go with me for sure. Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong singing ‘Summertime’. Not only is it gloriously happy-making, but it would...
