Plant hybrids in the wild: evidence from biological recording
Although plant hybrids are under‐recorded by botanists, the hybrids of Britain and Ireland are as well known as those of any comparable area. Of the 909 accepted hybrids, 301 have at least one alien parent and these include 152 taxa that have been introduced to the wild (usually from horticultural sources) as hybrids. The parental distributions of the spontaneous hybrids are described as either nested or overlapping; some of the most remarkable hybrids have parents with contrasting European distributions that overlap very narrowly. There are few annual or biennial hybrids and they tend to be sterile and closely associate...

Composition and Antimicrobial Activity of Euphrasia rostkoviana Hayne Essential Oil.
Authors: Novy P, Davidova H, Serrano-Rojero CS, Rondevaldova J, Pulkrabek J, Kokoska L Abstract Eyebright, Euphrasia rostkoviana Hayne (Scrophulariaceae), is a medicinal plant traditionally used in Europe for the treatment of various health disorders, especially as eyewash to treat eye ailments such as conjunctivitis and blepharitis that can be associated with bacterial infections. Some Euphrasia species have been previously reported to contain essential oil. However, the composition and bioactivity of E. rostkoviana oil are unknown. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the chemical composition and an...

Bioassay-guided fractionation of Euphrasia pectinata Ten. and isolation of iridoids with antiproliferative activity
Publication date: Available online 4 May 2015 Source:Phytochemistry Letters Author(s): Maria Carla Marcotullio , Monica Rosa Loizzo , Federica Messina , Andrea Temperini , Rosa Tundis , Francesco Menichini , Massimo Curini The use of aerial parts of Euphrasia pectinata Ten. usually known as Eyebright, is one of the common folk remedy in many European and Asian countries to treat eye problems. By a bioassay-guided fractionation of the dichloromethane fraction of E. pectinata methanolic extract, following the antiproliferative activity on different cancer cell lines (MCF-7, HeLa, LNCaP, ACHN and C32), the new irid...
