UNISON comments on latest NMC figures on UK nurses leaving the NHS ‎
Commenting on the latest NMC figures, UNISON head of health Sara Gorton said: “With both UK and EU nurses leaving, the NHS is heading towards a serious staffing crisis. The country simply isn’t training enough nurses to make up for those who are leaving. Scrapping the bursary and introducing tuition fees have only made matters worse. “Many organisations, including the NHS pay review body have warned that the pay freeze was not sustainable. Nurses’ and midwives’ pay has been held down for too many years, despite demand for their expertise growing. So it is no surprise they are leaving the NHS. “These...

Jeremy Corbyn: “ My thanks to everybody from UNISON for all that you did ”
This is the full text of the speech Jeremy Corbyn gave to UNISON’s national delegate conference on Friday. “Thank you for inviting me here today to your annual conference. It is a great pleasure to be back in Brighton for the first time since the election. Not only did the Labour Party increase our majority in Hove from just over 1,000 to almost 19,000 but we also gained Brighton Kemptown. The brilliant Lloyd Russell-Moyle turned a Tory majority of almost 700 into a Labour majority of 10,000, the biggest majority that any MP of any party has ever had in that constituency. Here in the South-East overall, Labour incr...

National delegate conference hails inspiring speech from Jeremy Corbyn
“The Labour Party and the labour movement: united for the many – not for the few. Be of good cheer – the election will come soon!” That was the message from Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn when he spoke to UNISON’s national delegate conference in Brighton this morning. He had arrived in the hall with general secretary Dave Prentis to a standing ovation, cheering, singing and applause. When he left after his first major speech since the general election, it was – if possible – to an even greater ovation. He began by praising the work that had plunged Prime Minister Theresa May into desperate haggling with th...

Huge drop in EU nurses applying to work in the UK
Only 46 nurses from the EU registered to work in the UK in April, a 96% drop since last July, according to new figures published today by the Health Foundation. Last July, 1,304 nurses applied, but the number dropped to just 344 two months later in September, figures obtained through a Freedom of Information request to the Nursing and Midwifery Council show. “The decline in applicants is extremely concerning,” said UNISON head of health Sara Gorton. “We have a recruitment and retention crisis in the NHS and patient care is suffering. “Training new staff, attracting former NHS workers back to the service, and recru...

General election 2017: The NHS
Increase NHS funding With many hospitals and other services stretched to breaking point, UNISON wants to see a major funding boost for our NHS. All of the main parties have committed to providing extra funding for the NHS in one form or another. In England, Labour will commit to over £30bn in extra funding over the next Parliament. The Conservatives will increase NHS spending by a minimum of £8bn in real terms over the next five years. The Lib Dems will put a penny on income tax to raise an extra £6bn for health and social care. Based on these headline statements, an analysis by the Nuffield Trust think tank estimates...
