Health workers and charities unite to urge rethink on NHS bursaries
Health workers and charities got together today to warn the government that its plans to abolish NHS bursaries and introduce student loans for those studying to become health professionals in England risks reducing the supply of vital health workers, when they are needed more than ever. They warn that the plans are “a short-sighted attempt to solve a long-term and complicated problem. “Moreover,” they warn, because the plans have not been properly risk-assessed, “continuing with them as they currently stand would be nothing short of reckless”. UNISON general secretary Dave Prentis joined repre...

Not a normal day for NHS workers
On a normal Wednesday morning Emily Heron would be taking patients’ blood pressure or doing observations. Or if she weren’t on a shift, she would be looking after her terminally ill dad, taking him to dialysis or hospital appointments. But on Wednesday 25 May she did something very different. Everyone knows about the appalling way the junior doctors have been treated by this government, but doctors aren’t the only ones. Emily is a health care assistant, and she’s one of a large group of people who want to become nurses, or are already working in nursing, who have a bone to pick with Jeremy Hunt. They’re angry and...

UNISON members urge MPs to save the NHS bursary
Student nurses descended on Parliament today to tell MPs not to scrap the NHS bursary. Around 80 student nurses, midwives, health care assistants and others attended the mass lobby organised by UNISON and other organisations. The government plans to scrap the NHS bursary, which was originally set up to acknowledge the fact that nurses work for the NHS – for free – for half the time they’re studying. Today UNISON members told their MPs that it’s wrong to saddle nurses with what would amount to indvidual debt of £51,600. The NHS bursary is a lifeline for nursing, midwifery and other health students. Nursing is consi...

If the NHS bursary goes, it will put the future of our health service at risk
Today the Save NHS Bursary lobby is taking place in Westminster, calling on the government to reverse its plan to axe support for student nurses, midwives and others training to become health professionals. As the UK’s largest health union, UNISON has been at the forefront of this campaign from the outset, working alongside other campaigns to stand up for the nursing profession against this most foolish and self-defeating of cuts. At a time when our NHS faces a nursing shortage (due in part to mismanagement and attacks on the profession), the government should be pulling out all of the stops to attract more people into c...
