The crucial brain foods all children need
Follow me on Twitter @drClaire The first 1,000 days of life are crucial for brain development — and food plays an important role. The ways that the brain develops during pregnancy and during the first two years of life are like scaffolding: they literally define how the brain will work for the rest of a person’s life. Nerves grow and connect and get covered with myelin, creating the systems that decide how a child — and the adult she becomes — thinks and feels. Those connections and changes affect sensory systems, learning, memory, attention, processing speed, the ability to control impulses and mood, and even the ...

When Does Being Sexually Uptight Become Dangerous?
Is the US the world’s most uptight nation regarding sex? Maybe not the most, but certainly among them. For example, the US has more laws regulating sexual behavior than all European countries combined. US prudishness is so severe as to be deadly. To end sexual violence and harassment against women, something has to change. Is America the World’s Most Uptight Nation When It Comes to Sex? Less than half of girls and boys in the US have received the HPV vaccinations that can protect them from deadly cancers. Why? Because HPV is a sexually transmitted infection (STI), and discussing teen sexual activity is taboo. Many doc...

What ’s going to replace hospitals that downsize?
I recently rounded on patients at Providence Hospital as the attending physician on the family medicine residency program’s inpatient service. Providence recently closed its maternity ward as the first step in a planned redevelopment of the hospital grounds into a “health village.” In the short term, the hospital’s decision to stop delivering babies may worsen maternal health disparities, as the entire eastern side of Washington, DC is now a “maternity care desert” with no labor and delivery services. In Providence’s defense, it lost $23 million in fiscal year 2016, and its long...

Doctor, you ’re now a parent. It’s time to get your financial plan in order.
Congratulations! After months of planning, you are now a proud parent. Starting today the rest of your life will change. No longer will you worry about getting reservations at the “in” restaurant. … or any restaurant. Nope. You won’t have time. Nor will you have energy. Both will get zapped, and that is okay. Instead, you will be figuring out breastfeeding, bottle feeding, sleep schedules, diaper changes, educational and interesting toys for a baby that just stares. And all of this is okay. In fact, it is better than okay, it is great! You are now on the next stage of your journey. As this journey begins, you may f...

Partnering4Health Report
Partnering4Health is a project funded by the Centers for Disease Control and between 2014 and 2017. Five national organizations were provided with CDC funding to support communities in their efforts to promote healthy lifestyle. The final aim of this project was to reduce death and disability due to tobacco use, decrease obesity and reduce the rate of death and disability related to diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Overall, 94 communities were provided with funding to make healthy food more accessible, create opportunities for physical activity, promote smoke free spaces and create breastfeeding friendly environments. ...

Consider Experience as Part of Evidence-Based Practice to Evolve Our Profession
I was happy to read Melanie Potock’s recent blog, “Three Structures in a Child’s Mouth That Can Cause Picky Eating.” The post sparked a considerable amount of discussion on social media. I also appreciated ASHA’s response about professional experiences, and the value they bring to our profession. I have several thoughts on this blog regarding evidence-based practice and tethered oral tissues (TOTs). ASHA reminds us on the website that evidence-based practice (EBP) involves clinical expertise/expert opinion coupled with scientific evidence and client perspective. To me, EBP means more than level-one research or la...

Supporting Nursing Mothers at Work
Looking for ways to support moms who need to pump at work? Women with children are the fastest growing segment of the workforce. According to the CDC, over 80% of women begin breastfeeding but many stop earlier than is recommended. Mothers need support from their families and communities but also at work especially when it comes to breastfeeding. Breastfeeding can be challenging in the best of environments but many women face extra barriers at work. When women return to work they need time and a space to pump so they can continue to give their best at home and at work. The Office on Women’s Health has provided severa...

Calling All Wonder Women —The US Health System Needs Strong Leaders, Healthy Mothers
Legend has it that the creation of Wonder Woman—the super hero and pop culture icon who has saved us from imminent doom since World War II—was inspired by real-life women’s health activists from the early twentieth century. These were women who bucked convention and championed causes like reproductive rights and suffrage. Women who saw opportunities for collective action where others saw insurmountable obstacles. Women who refused to be relegated to second-class status and instead became the driving force for creating a more just, inclusive world. We have come a long way since the days of Margaret Sanger and Susan B....

Better educated parents have children who are more relaxed, outgoing and explorative
This study doesn’t indicate a single definitive mechanism to explain why parental education is linked with children’s personality, and it’s likely that there are even more processes at that the researchers didn’t look into, such as the known association between lower Neuroticism / higher Openness and breastfeeding, an activity more common in more educated mothers. It seems likely that greater parental education provides their children with a constellation of benefits. And while there may be a genetic contribution, the adoption data suggests that the environment provided by educated parents may itself be shaping the...
