How Many Researchers: The FY 2022 Cumulative Investigator Rate
We are pleased to share our annual snapshot of how many researchers NIH supports. These fiscal year (FY) 2022 data are also available in the NIH Data Book (see report #303) and represent awards made with traditional and supplemental coronavirus appropriations. Please keep in mind that these data are distinct from success rates, however, which are application-based metrics (see this post). Our cumulative investigator rate is an NIH-wide person-based metric. The metric is calculated as the number of unique principal investigators who were designated on an NIH research project grant (RPG), activity or mechanism, divided by...

NIH Clinical Trials Reporting Compliance: A Shared Commitment
As the largest public funder of clinical trials in the United States, NIH is committed to the timely dissemination of clinical trial results information so that the benefits of the trial data can be realized. In support of this goal, in September 2016, NIH issued the NIH Policy on Dissemination of NIH-Funded Clinical Trial Information to establish our expectation that summary results of NIH-supported clinical trials be submitted to ClinicalTrials.gov for posting within 365 days of the actual primary completion date. This policy is complementary to a 2016 updated HHS regulation aimed at further increasing the availability o...

Trends in Extramural Research Integrity Allegations Received at NIH
At the start of the year, we briefly touched on our efforts to address research integrity violations in our 2022 Year In Review. Today we are sharing some more information on the overall trends in research integrity allegations associated with the NIH grants process. I want to note that while we are sharing these aggregate data, NIH does not discuss grants compliance reviews on specific funded awards, recipient institutions, or supported investigators, and whether such reviews occurred or are underway. Table 1 shows the total number of new research integrity allegation types that NIH received between calendar years (CYs) 2...

Marie A. Bernard, M.D., Chief Officer forScientific Workforce Diversity In this post, we analyze funding rates for Fiscal Year (FY) 2010 to FY 2022 mentored career development award (K) applicants according to the race-ethnicity of designated Principal Investigators (PIs). Receipt of a career development award often presages R01 receipt. We used data from frozen, official, NIH success rate files. We focus on applicants for K01, K08, K23, K25,and K99 direct budget authority awards. We obtained data on the race and ethnicity of PIs from their entries into the eRA Commons Personal Profile. Referring Study Sections Is a Work of “ART” (Assisted Referral Tool)
Did you know there’s a tool to help you find relevant study sections for your grant application? The Assisted Referral Tool (ART) was developed by the NIH Center for Scientific Review (CSR) to recommend potentially appropriate study sections using text from your application. Using these recommendations, you then have the opportunity to suggest the study section for the first level of scientific review of your application in the PHS Assignment Request form. In his blog post titled “Encouraging Use of the PHS Assignment Request Form in Applications,” the NIH Office of Extramural Research Director Dr. Mike Lauer discus...

Number of Postdoctoral Researchers Supported by NIH Grant Awards FY 2017-FY 2022
In this post we show the estimated number of postdoctoral researchers (“postdocs”) supported in recent years by NIH grants. We gathered these data in coordination with the Advisory Committee to the Director’s (ACD) Working Group on Re-envisioning NIH-Supported Postdoctoral Training. NIH can support postdocs and graduate students through the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) program, which offers fellowship (“F”) and training (“T”) awards that are limited to United States citizens. However, most NIH support for postdocs and graduate students comes from non-NRSA research project and res...
