Why I Love to Learn History
I’m learning history more these days. While I’m far from being an expert, my interest in it has grown over time. I mainly learn through reading, but sometimes I also listen to podcasts and watch documentaries. What is so interesting about history? Well, here are four reasons why I love to learn history. 1. Learning from the experiences of others is a smart way to learn. There is a quote I like from Ken Schramm: “A smart person learns from his mistakes, but a truly wise person learns from the mistakes of others.” It’s good to learn from your mistakes, but it’s even better to learn from the mistakes of others. Wh...

A Key to Being Creative Like Leonardo da Vinci
What is the key to being creative? What is the factor behind it? I believe that the answer to this question is important. After all, being creative is essential in this age of automation. More and more routine tasks are being automated, so your creativity can make the difference between thriving and sinking. I already wrote about creativity before (here is one), but this time I’d like to take a different view. I’d like to focus on what I believe is a key factor to being creative: diversity. Diversity is about the different perspectives that you have in your arsenal. It’s about having a toolbox instead of just a hamme...

Bold and Persistent Experimentation: A Key Tool for Progress
I just finished reading Think Again by Adam Grant. It’s a book about rethinking, both at individual and group levels. Here I’d like to discuss one part of the book. It’s about the importance of experimentation. Here is an excerpt: It was 1932, and the governor of New York was Franklin Delano Roosevelt. He delivered his “try something” message as the country was reeling from the Great Depression… In the most memorable line from the speech, FDR argued that “the country demands bold, persistent experimentation.” That principle became a touchstone of his leadership… Bold, persistent experimentation might be ...

Being Playful but Resourceful: Two Qualities for an Adventurous Life
I’m currently reading A Man for All Markets, a memoir by Edward O. Thorp. It chronicles his story as a mathematics professor who tried to beat the casinos in gambling games. Later, he did something similar in the financial markets. He eventually became the pioneer of quantitative finance. I enjoyed the book and learned a lot from it. Among others, the book taught me about calculating the odds before making a bet and balancing risks and returns. But what I’d like to share with you in this post is the qualities that I noticed in Ed Thorp’s life. As I was looking for the right words to describe them, two words came to m...

How To Be Prepared for Opportunities
You only get a few opportunities, and you have to grab them aggressively when they come because even in the most favored life, they’re really rare. – Charlie Munger How do you reach your full potential? A big part of that, I believe, is making the most of your opportunities. The more you can capitalize on the opportunities that come your way, the better off you will be. But if you don’t make the most of them or – worse – miss them altogether, you wouldn’t do well. So how do you make the most of the opportunities? Well, I believe that the key is being prepared. Opportunities could come anytime, e...

Two Life Lessons I Learned From Reading This Kind of War
I recently read This Kind of War by T.R. Fehrenbach. It’s a history book about the Korean War. It had sat in my Kindle library for a while and one day I decided to read just a bit of it. But then I couldn’t stop reading it! The book is a page-turner for me. It’s a history book but reads like a thriller. I found myself spending a long stretch of time on it. At this point, I haven’t finished the book yet (it’s 600+ pages long), but I’ve learned a lot from it. There are lessons on strategy from the book, but here I’d like to focus on the life lessons. The lessons are simple, but they have a profound impact on me...

Purpose Mastery Is Open: Get a Renewed Sense of Purpose
2021 is coming, and I believe we should be prepared to make the most of it. A key part of that is getting a renewed sense of purpose. A renewed sense of purpose will give you the motivation you need to thrive in 2021. To help you do that, Purpose Mastery is now open for enrollment. Purpose Mastery is a course I created on how to find and live out your purpose in life. It’s open for a limited time and I open it just a few times a year. The last time I opened it was nine months ago in March. If you want to get a renewed sense of purpose in 2021, you can check out the course. (Source: Life Optimizer)

What You Need to Thrive in 2021
As we are ending 2020 and approaching 2021, a question came to my mind: how can we thrive in 2021? 2020, needless to say, has been a challenging year. The word “unprecedented” seems to be used again and again. But 2021 is coming. How can we make the most of it? I believe there is one thing that can make a big difference in your life next year. That one thing is hope. Hope is what you need in 2021. Hope is what helps you not just survive but thrive. With hope I mean this: the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best. With this definition, hope will spark optimism. Optimism will th...
