The 7 Injuries Doctors See Most On Summer Weekends
Warm weather and longer days will bring many Americans outdoors for cookouts, pool parties and more. But long weekends ― we’re looking at you, Memorial Day ― also lead to more trips to urgent care or even the emergency room, according to experts. In fact, a 2015 study from researchers at Brown University found that heat-related illness alone can ratchet emergency department visits in the summertime.  The risk for issues like drowning and sports injuries go up in the hotter seasons, according to Dr. Christopher M. McStay, chief of clinical operations and associate professor at the University of Colorado ...

Why You Should Always, Always Check Your Sunscreen's Expiration Date
Picture me, age 14: Blond, blue-eyed and pasty-pale. It was a scorching hot weekend in June, and I was on a three-day camping trip with my dad. As two fair-skinned, freckle-faced Caucasians, we diligently applied sunscreen — SPF 45 — each morning before emerging from our tent, and every couple of hours thereafter. Coppertone would have been proud. Sunday evening on the way home, though, I felt red and hot. I could see the signs of sunburn emerging, and I felt tired and dizzy from too much time in the sun. When I awoke on Monday morning, my shoulders and upper back were covered in second-degree burns, oozing, pu...

Hope for plant-based contraceptive, study claims
Conclusion This laboratory study aimed to investigate a variety of steroid hormones and plant compounds to look at their effect on sperm activation and ability to fertilise an egg. The researchers confirmed that the hormone progesterone present in the female reproductive tract seems to be needed to activate sperm and make them able to fertilise an egg. The also found that two plant compounds, pristimerin and lupeol, were able to block the sites on the sperm that are activated by progesterone. This means these two compounds could have a potential contraceptive action. But it's far too early to say whether new contraceptiv...

When sportswriter and commentator Stephen Campbell got a bad sunburn, he didn’t try to hide it. Simple Cure for Cat Constipation
The most common cause of constipation in a kitty is inadequate fluid intake. Cats are by nature infrequent and inefficient water drinkers. They depend on their diet for the majority of their water intake, which is how nature intended things to work. But herein lies the problem. Many cats are fed dry food, which isn't the food they are designed to eat. Cats are obligate carnivores designed to hunt mice. Mice, as it turns out, provide the perfect balance of fiber (their fur), protein and moisture in one tiny package. Mice are 70 percent water, which provides kitties with exactly the amount they need for their bodies to rem...

Director's Message: Herbal Products: Be an Informed Consumer
As I mentioned in my January 2013 Director’s message, many visitors to the NCCAM website seek information about herbal products, such as evening primrose oil, St. John’s wort, fenugreek, echinacea, and aloe vera. And, while some herbs have had more research, others have had very little. This not only means we may be unaware of whether the herb has any potential benefits, it also means that we may know very little about potential harms, such as herb-drug interactions.
