Current status of the credential “mechanical thrombectomy for acute ischaemic stroke” sponsored by the Royal College of Radiologists. What factors are preventing approval of training for non-radiologists to perform MT in the UK?

General Medical Council (GMC) Credentials are being developed to improve oversight of training in areas of practice that develop outside a GMC-recognised parent specialty, or to help address areas where clinical needs are not currently being met. This commentary describes why and how the Royal College of Radiologists (RCR)-sponsored Credential (Acute Stroke) was prepared and submitted to the GMC Curriculum Oversight Group (COG) and then substantially revised to the RCR-sponsored Credential (Mechanical Thrombectomy for Acute Ischaemic Stroke, MTAIS) in response to advice from the GMC COG.
