A comprehensive overview of tumour deposits in colorectal cancer: towards a next TNM classification
Colorectal cancer (CRC) is currently the third most common cancer worldwide and the second leading cause of cancer deaths, with more than 1,800,000 new cases and nearly 900,000 deaths each year, worldwide [1]. Its management is based on the TNM staging system, developed in the 1950s, which has been constantly evolving throughout the history of scientific advances [2-6]. The latest 8th edition of the TNM classification has been published in 2017 [7]. Yet, it is essential to identify new histological markers to further improve the classification and to define more relevant subgroups of patients.
