Comprehensive analysis of patients with failure of mandibular hardware

Mandible fractures (MFs) are the second most common facial fractures in adults.1,2 Treatment of MFs are essential to maintain proper speech, swallowing, and mastication.3 Most MF undergo open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). When ORIF of MF fails, significant cost to patients and healthcare systems exists4; treatment complications cost on average $11,637 (range, $3,682 to $29,805) 4 per case. Previous studies evaluated factors likely to cause mandibular hardware to fail (i.e. delay in surgical intervention,5 location of fracture,5 medical comorbidities,6 patient compliance, 6 substance abuse, 6 plating technique/s, severity of facial trauma).
