Surgical equity: Care for persons experiencing homelessness

Homelessness is a public health crisis that affects over half a million people in the United States.1 Homelessness is caused by an interaction of individual and structural factors. Key drivers of housing instability include absence of safety nets, discrimination, lack of affordable housing, policies (e.g., minimum wage), poverty, and a disproportionate burden of untreated mental illness. Importantly, the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has exacerbated the national housing instability crisis through its effects on the economy and accessibility of social services, putting more Americans at risk of experiencing homelessness.
