“ROAAOMS Women in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Mentorship Program: The First Year”

In 2018, the number of female dental students surpassed males, 51% to 49%. This tiny tip of the scales is symbolically huge in our historically male-dominated profession. Although women now account for over half of dental trainees, there remains a large disparity in oral and maxillofacial surgery residents, with women only accounting for 12% of graduates in 2019.1 Various theories about this sharp drop-off exist, however ia lack of mentorship is a major barrier. A survey of attendees, a large portion of which were dental students, of the 2019 Women in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Symposium found that 46% lacked a mentor, and that lack of mentorship was 1 of the largest perceived impediments to women's pursuit of a career in oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS).
