Comment on: Early postoperative follow-up reduces risk of late severe nutritional complications after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: a population-based study

Bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment for patients with severe obesity and weight-related morbidity, and long-term outcomes depend at least partly on compliance and follow-up. Anatomic alterations of the gastrointestinal tract can result in vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Factors that affect nutritional complications include excessive weight loss, dumping syndrome, persistent vomiting and diarrhea, preexisting deficiency, failure to take dietary supplements, and inadequate nutritional follow-up.
