Lymphocytic infiltrate at the dermo ‒epidermal junction characterizes the chronic systemic autoimmune disorder dermatomyositis (DM). Previously, CD4+ T cells were thought to be the predominant infiltrating cells. Patel et al. employed imaging mass cytometry, which incorporates flow cytometry principles at the single-cell level whil e preserving tissue histology and architecture, to identify multiple cellular subsets in the inflammatory infiltrate. CD14+ macrophages, which correlated with measures of disease severity, were the most frequent, whereas CD11c+ myeloid dendritic cells (DCs) and CD14+CD16+ macrophages were the next m ost common.
