When the N Is 65 Million —The Rise of Database Research

Launched in 2014, the American Academy of Ophthalmology IRIS Registry (Intelligent Research in Sight) is a repository containing data for more than 65 million unique patients, making it the largest national clinical specialty data registry currently in existence. A database of this magnitude has tremendous potential to unveil longitudinal trends and outcomes that feed our understanding of ophthalmic diseases and treatments. Over the past 7 years, as participation in the IRIS Registry has steadily grown, insights have followed.
