Comment on: Early Post-Operative Follow-Up Reduces Risk of Late Severe Nutritional Complications After Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass: A Population Based Study
Bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment for patients with severe obesity and weight-related morbidity and long-term outcomes are at least partly dependent on compliance and follow-up. Anatomic alterations of the gastrointestinal tract can result in vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Factors that affect nutritional complications include excessive weight loss, dumping syndrome, persistent vomiting and diarrhea, pre-existing deficiency, failure to take dietary supplements and inadequate nutritional follow-up.
